My Review: This book is everything the title promises. It will spark children’s imaginations as they consider what it would be like to be really, really big or what it would be like to travel through time or live underground. The illustrations are absolutely stunning. It is a book that is made for both a child and the parent/teacher reading it. I loved spending a long time on each page, exploring all of the different drawings to better imagine each scenario. After reading the book, I couldn’t help but want to meet the illustrator and give him a nod of approval. This is a book that will inspire a lot of creativity in homes and classrooms.

Teachers’ Tools for NavigationThis would be a fantastic way to jump start a creative writing unit. I could see the different pages as writing inspirations for students to use words to imagine a scenario of their choice from their favorite spread in the book. I also think it would be fun to ask students to add a page to this book—to imagine another scenario and illustrate what it would look like.

Discussion Questions: Choose one scenario and imagine other things that could have gone on the pages. Why might the illustrator have made the choices that he did?; How does the illustrator creatively imagine each scenario? How does he use color and art to make the book engaging?

Ricki’s Review: In the introduction of the ARC, Dan Gemeinhart writes that this story was inspired by his friend Mark, who passed away from cancer. While the book is not about Mark, there are “smooth rocks of truth” within it. He wrote the story in hopes that Mark would enjoy reading it. With this in mind, I began the book already emotionally invested. Mark is a 12-year-old boy who has recently relapsed with cancer. He is tired of being sick, and he has set out with his dog and plans to go to Mt. Rainier to die. Much of the book is Mark’s journey to Rainier, and we slowly learn about his experiences with cancer throughout the story. Every other chapter is written by his best friend Jesse, and I found their friendship to be inspiring, particularly given the author’s introduction. This is a beautiful story that will leave a mark on readers’ hearts. I will be recommending it often.

Kellee’s Review: The Honest Truth was my first choice for my school’s faculty book club because I had only hear amazing things about it. I jumped into reading it without knowing anything about it, but by the end of the first page, I knew that all my friends who recommended it to me were right. Mark has a voice that is so full of hurt and sorrow that it jumps off the page and into your heart. The obstacles he faces and overcomes while also making his way to die alone show the strength of his character. I also was a big fan of the two points of view because it allows the reader to see what was going on at home and maybe get some more truth than what Mark was telling us (though he swears it all is the honest truth).

For our book club meeting, I tabbed up my book with passages I loved (I’ll list all the pages below), haikus that Mark wrote, and descriptions of all of the photographs he took along the way.

Teachers’ Tools for Navigation: This would make a fantastic read-aloud. It has so much to discuss! The richly realized themes would make for fantastic conversations in the classroom. I would love to hear students’ thoughts about the story, particularly in relation to the discussion questions below. There are many debatable points in the story—which makes it all the more interesting to use as a read aloud!

Additionally, The Honest Truth would be a good introduction to haiku and visual story telling since Mark writes haiku and takes photographs to help tell his story. The haiku (in chronological order) are found on pages 120, 8, 22, 78, 79, 130. The photos Mark took are explained on pages 226-227. Using these as mentor texts, students can create their own story using poetry and photography.

Discussion Questions: Was Mark selfish to leave home? Do you think he should have told his parents? Do you think what he did was fair? Were his actions fair to his dog?; If you were Jesse, would you have told authorities? Was she wrong to keep a secret? Do you think Mark had the ability to make such a big decision?; How did Gemeinhart use personification to help make the setting a character (see pages 34, 124, and 196)?; How much pressure do sick children have to act like adults?; How was Mark’s journey selfish? How was is selfless?; Who called? Wesley or Jess?; Why didn’t the mom ever look at her credit card report to see the train ticket?; Were you angry at Mark? Scared? How do you think students will feel?; Is a 12-year-old old enough to decide you want to die? Is it reasonable for adults to expect a kid to keep on going through treatment after treatment?

Review: Fourteen-year-old Adam Spencer Ross is coping with many struggles—his obsessive compulsive disorder, his mother’s troubles, and his step-brother’s reliance on him. Adam joins a support group and connects deeply with Robyn, a fellow group member. All of the group members adopt superhero alter egos, but Adam finds it difficult to hide the fact that his rituals are increasingly getting worse. Adam wonders how he can have a normal relationship amidst the chaos he feels. Emotionally-charged, raw story with complex characters.

Teachers’ Tools for Navigation: Similar to my post about Kids of AppetiteI’d love to include this book in a group of literature circle books that all reflect disability and friendship. It would be interesting for students to examine and conceptualize their definitions of normal. The ALAN Review‘s Fall 2016 issue is about (Re)Defining Normal, and many of the articles would be very useful for this very topic.

Discussion Questions: What struggles does Adam face? How do each of them impact his life?; What role does Adam’s mother play in his life? His father? Sweetie? Robin? Chuck? How do they all impact him positively and/or negatively?; How does Adam change throughout the novel?; What do the superhero personas offer the characters?; What is the role of family in the text? How may family be examined by traditionally and untraditionally within the context of the characters?

We Flagged: “I believe that I am a liar because I have to hide all the things I have to hide. It’s hard to remember where one lie ends and another begins. I believe lying that much changes you, makes you sick” (p. 12).

Ricki’s Review: This book captured my attention as soon as I saw the cover. The illustrations are beautiful, and I couldn’t help but sit for long periods of time, studying them closely. I appreciated and enjoyed this lyrical story that is based on Georgie Badiel’s childhood experiences. I have the F&G, and I am particularly excited to read the author’s note when the full book is printed. I know Georgie Badiel is an activist and leads a foundation dedicated to promoting clean drinking water and sanitation in Africa, so I think the author’s note will be particularly insightful. 

Kellee’s Review: The hardest books for me to read are the books where they seem as if they are historical fiction yet they are modern stories. It makes me so sad to know that there are those like Gie Gie who must work this hard just to get water. I feel like our world must help those who struggle in this way because water is a basic need that all should have access to. I think this book is a wonderful introduction to build awareness because many students do not know what is happening around the world, and this story is told in a beautiful yet truthful and hard way. Also, the connection it has with A Long Walk to Water makes it a perfect addition to a unit looking at that novel. Additionally, I must add that Peter H. Reynolds outdid himself with the illustrations in this book. I love Reynolds’s work, but these are pure pieces of art. Beautiful. I also look forward to the end notes because I want to learn more about Georgie Badiel and her work. 

Teachers’ Tools for Navigation: It would be great for teachers to build students’ awareness of the water/sanitation concerns within Africa. This might include reading more books about the subject and visiting websites supporting the cause. Georgie Badiel’s foundation is: http://georgiebadielfoundation.org/, and there are also many others out there, including: http://www.waterforsouthsudan.org/. I know of two elementary school classes who have devoted their entire year to raising money to build wells in Africa. These kinds of social action projects will surely impact students.

Discussion Questions: What does Princess Gie Gie’s day look like? What do the other women’s days look like? Why do you think this is?; Does Gie Gie feel frustrated? How might you feel in the same situation?; What can we do to support our peers who are living in similar situations to Gie Gie?

A friend read this book and recommended it to me in early high school. At that point, I wasn’t free reading much, and my love for this book kicked me into gear. I realized there were some great books out there. I’d be curious to read it now as an adult.

Horror, family secrets, forbidden love…I read dozens of these books in high school.

3. Anything by Lurlene McDaniel

Her books always dealt with grief and death, and for some reason, this intrigued me. I think I read every single book that she wrote.

4. God’s Debris: A Thought Experiment by Scott Adams (Creator of Dilbert)

My best friend and I became obsessed with religion in high school. We found this book and absolutely loved it. It is philosophical, and it made me interested in reading about other culture’s religions.

5. The Bus Driver Who Wanted to Be God by Etgar Keret

This is a collection of very funny, very inappropriate short stories. They are peculiar and a bit indecent. The cover describes the stories as “warped and wonderful,” which is spot on.

Most of the books that made me swoon in high school were because they were a bit scandalous or scary! And funny enough, scary books are now some of my least favorite! I do still love a scandal though! Here were my favorites:

1. Flowers in the Attic and its sequels by VC Andrews

This whole premise was so messed up but I read it so many times! And it sucked me into their world (and thus the world of VC Andrews).

2. Forever by Judy Blume

Man! For a 14 year old, this book was SO scandalous! But it also is exactly what a teenage girl needs.

3. and 4. Fear Street by R.L. Stine and anything by Christopher Pike

Anyone who was a teen in the 90s loved these books. Our public library had a turnstile of just Pike and Stine books–I read them all!

5. Hannibal series by Thomas Harris

Hannibal is just so messed up! And I was fascinated by him! This started me on a bit of a crime reading journey also.

Ricki’s Review: After I received A Carnival of Cats for review, my son wanted to read it every night. I have that book memorized, and it is a delightful book to know by heart! So when I heard that A Parade of Puppies was coming out, I jumped at the chance to review it. Charles Ghigna’s clever rhymes make the story engaging and fun. I loved being able to teach my son about different dog breeds, and I am looking forward to going to the park, so we can practice his new knowledge! It is hard to find board books that are fun to read over and over and over again, but I know I will enjoy reading this book each time that my son requests it.

Kellee’s Review: I love when books teach toddlers specific knowledge instead of assuming that they aren’t able to learn things like dog breeds. Charles Ghigna’s two books, A Carnival of Cats and A Parade of Puppies, assumes that toddlers want to learn more than just dog vs. cat (which, as a mother of a toddler, is true). Trent loves looking and talking about the differences between the different types of dogs (which is bigger? Has spots? etc.).

Teachers’ Tools for Navigation: Teachers might ask students to write extended rhymes for this book. Charles covers a lot of popular, fun dog breeds, and students would have a lot of fun researching other breeds and creating additional pages for this book. I can see a bulletin board covered with a parade of puppies! That would bring warmth to a classroom!

Discussion Questions: How does the author make decisions about rhyme? Are there certain dog breed names that seem more difficult to rhyme with? How did he creatively solve this issue?; What dog breeds are included? What breeds are missing? Why do you think he chose to include certain breeds and not others?
