Top Ten Tuesday: Our Bookish Bucket List

 Last Week’s Journeys

Kellee: I’ve continued being able to find time to read my novels–YAY! I finished Bruised by Sarah Skilton, and I am so glad that it came onto my radar. It is a special, unique little book. I look forward to sharing it with you soon. I started Wild Awake by Hilary T. Smith, and so far, I am enjoying it. It is a look at grief and love.

Trent and I have been keeping up with our picture book #bookaday, and we’re making quite a dent. He’s already at 38 books! This week, we read:

• The Napping House by Audrey Wood (Classic! And just as good as the first time I read it.)
• Board Books from the Disney Bedtime Stories: Aristocats, Aladdin, Bambi, and Alice in Wonderland (I love these little Disney stories. I still have 6 more to read from the set, I believe. Thanks to Jessica for these!)
• I Love You Through and Through by Bernadette Rossetti-Shustak (So true! The love you feel for a child is one you can’t understand. Thank you to Katie for this one–I’m sure it’ll be a favorite.)
• Horns and Toes by Sandra Boynton (After Sandra Boynton was mentioned last week, I had to read the one I had 😀 I loved Sandra Boynton books when I was younger, and I am glad to read them again. Thank you to Cristen for this one.)

Ricki: I had a very busy week, so I only finished three books. I read Brian Floca’s Locomotive (see my review on Thursday). It was incredible! I am so glad Kellee recommended it to me. My husband, son, and I were taken back to the summer of 1869, and we learned so much about the locomotive! I also read Jacqueline Woodson’s Each Kindness (see my review next Thursday!). This is a very powerful story that really affected me. I plan to read it often to my son because I think the message is so very important. Lastly, I read Mr. Wuffles by David Wiesner. I expected to like it more than I did. Everyone has raved about it, and maybe my expectations were too high. 

This Week’s Expeditions

Kellee: I plan on finishing Wild Awake, and hopefully start All Our Yesterdays by Cristin Terrill. Trent and I will continue our #bookaday by first finishing our Disney bedtime stories readathon, and then we’ll tackle the amazing pile of books our book angel, Alyson, sent us.

Ricki: Henry and I took another trip to the library. I am not sure the librarian enjoyed signing out twelve picture books, but we always return them promptly! I am giddy just thinking about them. We are also continuing to read The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe together. I am still reading Peter McLaren’s Life in Schools, and I am halfway through e. lockhart’s We Were Liars. I will definitely be reviewing this one. 🙂

Top Ten Tuesday: Books On Our Spring TBR Lists

 Last Week’s Journeys

Kellee: I was able to finish Robyn Schneider’s novel The Beginning of Everything this week (YAY!!). I had started it before Trent was born, but hadn’t been able to find time or brain power to truly read until this last week when I made sure to fit reading into my schedule. I think that my brain NEEDS reading or I really start to feel like I am dragging. After finishing, The Beginning of Everything, I started Bruised by Sarah Skilton. It is quite an interesting read so far. The verdict is still out if I like it or not.

On top of the novels, I also continued by picture book #bookaday with Trent. This week we read:

• Baby Loves to Rock by Wednesday Kirwan
• Rockin’ Babies by Jenn Berman
• Rocker Babies Wear Jeans by Michelle Sinclair Colman
  • (Like I promised, I read some rocker books that were given to me by my friend Jill this week. I really liked them all. They are obviously written to be funny for the parents reading them as well as for the kids. I think I liked Baby Loves to Rock the best.)
• Hello Baby! by Mem Fox (This book was so kindly given to me by my friend JoEllen. I’m so glad this is the book she decided to share with Trent. Neither he or I had read any Mem Fox before, and I was so happy to finally get to read one of her books. This one is illustrated by Steve Jenkins and I really enjoy his artwork. Overall, exactly as wonderful as everyone says.)
• David Smells! by David Shannon (My friend Cristen and her daughter Lucinda love David books, and I am so glad that she shared him with me. I like that this book taught a bit of a lesson, but also was quite entertaining.)
• The Cat in the Hat by Dr. Seuss (Like Ricki, this book was longer than I remembered and Trent actually didn’t make it through. It is such a classic, and I can see why. Great rhyme, rhythm, story, and theme.)
• I Love You Because You’re You by Liza Baker (SO SWEET! I love reading books like this to Trent.)

Ricki: I had a great reading week! I finished Threatened by Eliot Schrefer. It was fantastic. I will be reviewing it this Thursday! I also read several great children’s books. I loved Ten Little Fingers and Ten Little Toes by Mem Fox. It was so good that I plan to order it to have in Henry’s library. I want to read it over and over again! I also read Mem Fox’s Where the Giant Sleeps. I thought the story was okay, but I really loved the illustrations the most. They are beautiful. Last week, I discovered Anna Dewdney’s Llama Llama series, as well. I am not a children’s book expert, but I am learning! (I know much, much more about YAL as a field.) I read Llama Llama Misses Mama, and my husband read Llama Llama Red Pajama. I enjoyed the humor of Alan Sitomer’s Daddies Do It Different Sunday night, and closed the night off with Sandra Boynton’s Snuggle Puppy. Thank you all for your recommendations. Henry and I are having a great time with these books and authors you are recommending!
(Kellee: I LOVE seeing you discover great picture books Ricki! Llama Llama is one of my favorite series and I, too, discovered Mem Fox this week. I love that we are on this adventure together!)

This Week’s Expeditions

Kellee: I plan on finished Bruised and start Wild Awake by Hilary Smith. As for our picture books, I am not sure what we are going to explore this week. It’ll depend on what I am feeling like each day although I do have a pile of picture books from Candlewick that are taunting me!

Ricki: I am still reading Life in Schools by Peter McLaren. I will tell more about this when I have read more than 50 pages. 🙂 I am also still reading The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis to Henry. I can’t decide which YAL book is next, but like most of you (I am sure), I have a few galleys that are calling my name…

 Last Week’s Journeys

Kellee: Our picture book #bookaday is going so well! We’ve read 25 picture books in 24 days of his life. I hope this helps build a strong lifetime of book love.  This week we read:

• Bert and Ernie’s First Book of Opposites by Heather Au (I loved introducing Trent to some of my favorite Sesame Street characters. I CANNOT wait to start watching the show with him.)
• Giraffes Can’t Dance by Giles Andreae (I love Tacky the Penguin because of its message about being happy with who you are, and Giraffes Can’t Dance gives a similar message that makes me automatically love it.)
• I Want My Hat Back by Jon Klassen (Watching my sister read this for the first time to Trent was PRICELESS! What a joy to see someone find the amazingness of Hat Back.)
• Press Here by Herve Tullet (Ever since I read this book, I have wanted to read it with a kid. Watching my sister read this with Trent was so much fun, and I know he will love it when he is older.)
• If I Were A Penguin… by Anne Wilkinson (Cute book about penguins that I read to Trent while he was wearing a penguin outfit.)
• Trucks: Baby Touch and Feel by DK Publishing & Animals: Baby Touch and Feel by DK Publishing (Both very simple books introducing baby animals and trucks, but they have some great opportunities for tacticle exploration.)

I’ve also continued working on The Beginning of Everything by Robyn Schneider and I am really enjoying it. The reading is going slower than it went before Trent, but I did find time to read 2 days this week. I hope to finish it ASAP.

Ricki: First of all, thank you all for sharing your interests with us last week. If anyone else would like to give suggestions for our blog, please visit this link. This week, I read a picture book to Henry: Here Comes Grandma by Janet Lord (in preparation for his grandma’s visit) I absolutely love this Little House picture book series. I am not so sure if Henry will like them when he is old enough to understand them, so I am going to read the whole series beforehand, just in case! I also finished Ideology and Curriculum by Michael Apple. It is one of those PD books that is very important but quite boring. Apple is very articulate and has a lot to say, but the text is highly political, and it felt like it took me forever to finish it.

This Week’s Expeditions

Kellee: Our picture book #bookaday is going to continue. This week I plan on reading some rocker books to Trent that was given to me by my friend Jill as well as some Dr. Seuss. I hope to finish The Beginning of Everything and then start Bruised by Sarah Skilton.

Ricki: Henry and I started The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis tonight. I have never read it, and his uncle saw this on one of my blog posts, and he sent us a copy! We started it tonight, but Henry fell asleep when Lucy was in the wardrobe, so I thought it might be best to wait until he is awake to continue. 🙂 I am also starting Life in Schools by Peter McLaren. He, supposedly, has a sociocultural view of schools, so I am interested to learn more about what he has to say. I am sure we will also dive into a few more picture books this week. We picked up some of the books that a few of you recommended, so I am excited to read them. I will be honest—our library is modest, so many of the books on my list of blogger recommendations aren’t in the library!

 Last Week’s Journeys

Kellee: This week, Trent and I continued our #bookaday reading and I am really enjoying it (I need to really set aside some time to write some posts about these great books we are reading). This week we read:

• Rainbow Rob by Roger Priddy (What a fun rhyming book about animals, colors, identity, and feels.)
• Do Cows Meow? by Salina Yoon (Another fun animal book–this one with flaps! The rhyming really makes books so much more fun to read aloud.)
• Lost and Found by Oliver Jeffers (This is a new favorite of mine. Oliver Jeffers’s illustrations are haunting yet beautiful and the story was just perfect. This one is definitely one we’ll reread.)
• Daddy Kisses by Anne Gutman (Jim read this one to Trent. It is all about kids and their dads. Very sweet.)
• How Do Dinosuars Count to Ten? by Jane Yolen (I had to read a Yolen Dinosaur book after hearing so much about them from Ricki, and they didn’t disappoint. I love how it mixes dinosaurs, math, reading, and humor.)
• Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? by Bill Martin, Jr. (This classic is so much fun to sing.)
• Never Too Little To Love by Jeanne Willis (I reviewed this book on Valentine’s Day and had to read it to Trent because it is just so sweet. He’ll love the flaps and the story when he gets older.)

Ricki: This week, Henry, Dad, and I read Easy as Pie by Cari Best, which was a cute cooking store. I love cooking, and I love pie, so this was a great one! It teaches some nice lessons to kids (including cleaning the kitchen!). I also read Robert McCloskey’s One Morning in Maine. I didn’t like this one as much as the others I read, but it was a good story to read to a child with a loose tooth. We read There’s a Wocket in my Pocket by Dr. Seuss. Oh, this one was quite fun! All of the other children’s books we read to Henry were repeats. We need to go back to the library!

This Week’s Expeditions

Kellee: Week three with Trent will consist of more picture book #bookaday with him.  It is always fun to look through his books and decide what we are going to read that day–he already has such a wonderful library, but there is always more I want to get! I am going to try and read some of my novel this week (though I am not sure where I am going to fit it in yet). Before I had him I was reading The Beginning of Everything by Robyn Schneider and was really enjoying it–we’ll see!!!

Ricki: I am forging on with Michael Apple’s Ideology and Curriculum. It still makes me sleepy. I have been working on writing a research article about my Young Adult Literature elective with my advisor, Wendy Glenn, so that has taken much of my time. My brother-in-law bought me a copy of The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis after reading Tuesday’s post that I have seen the movie but never read the book. It looks like Henry and I will be enjoying that one.

Last Week’s Journeys

Kellee: First, I want to thank you all for the congratulations on the arrival of Trent. I am so in love with my little man! I will say, though, as expected, my reading has dropped in priority really quickly; however, I have vowed to do #bookaday with my little one for as long as I can, and we started on day 3. We have read some really fantastic picture books so far. I am so in awe of how much books already keep Trent’s attention. Here’s what we have read so far:

• The Little Mouse, the Red, Ripe Strawberry, and the Big Hungry Bear by Audrey and Don Wood (This was our first book because it was my husband’s, brother’s, and best friend’s favorite book as a kid.)
• Ten Apples Up on Top by Dr. Seuss (This was our second book because it was the first book I ever “read”.)
• Oh the Thinks you can Think by Dr. Seuss (Dr. Seuss is so inspiring!)
• On the Night You Were Born by Nancy Tillman (Um… why didn’t anyone warn me that I’d be crying by the end of page 1?!?!)
• Cinderella Penguin by Janet Perlman (In honor of Read a Fairy Tale Day; read to him by his G’ma.)
• Forever by Emma Dodd (Another tear jerker. Also, a great book for young children because there are shiny pages that really caught Trent’s attention.)
• Goodnight Moon by Margaret Wise Brown (He was PASSED OUT for this one, so I will definitely have to reread.) 
• Paul Meets Bernadette by Rosy Lamb (The artwork in this one was beautiful and the colors of many pages fascinated Trent.)
• The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle (Read in honor of our newborn photos where Trent was dressed up as the very hungry caterpillar.)
• Are You My Mother? by P.D. Eastman (We’d actually listened to the You Tube video of this book while feeding as well, but we also read the board book.)
• Chicago Cubs ABC by Brad Epstein (It is BASEBALL SEASON!!! I have to prepare Trent :D)

Ricki: How can I top that awesome post by Kellee? Henry and I took another trip to the library, where we checked out some new, exciting books. My husband is from Boston, and his favorite children’s author is Robert McCloskey, so we read Make Way for Ducklings and Blueberries for Sal. Both were excellent. I also read a newer children’s book called Amazing Grace by Mary Hoffman. It was a very inspirational read that has great themes for kids about resilience. Lastly, I finished Other People’s Children by Lisa Delpit, my professional development read of the week. I didn’t agree with everything in the book, but I found it to be extremely thought-provoking in a very healthy way. I would love to discuss this book in a classroom setting.

This Week’s Expeditions

Kellee: I am not sure when my reading will happen again, but we will see because the book I was reading (The Beginning of Everything by Robyn Schneider) was getting really good! Trent’s Year One #bookaday will continue if nothing else. I’ll keep you updated 🙂

Ricki: My next professional development read is Michael Apple’s Ideology and Curriculum. So far, it is highly political and makes me a bit sleepy. Has anyone had luck with it? I will read the whole book, but I am curious what others think. I suspect it will teach me some interesting educational aspects, and the author seems to be very bright. I have seen Apple in a lot of educational papers, so I am keeping a very open mind! I am also deep into Threatened by Eliot Schrefer. I LOVE it. It is my middle-of-the-night-feeding, stay-awake read, so I am savoring it. On another note, my younger sister (who is brilliant, in my humble opinion) doesn’t love reading fiction. I gave her Endangered by Eliot Schrefer several months ago, and she just called me to tell me how much she loves it. WIN!

Last Week’s Journeys

Kellee: Ricki here. I am so excited to announce that Kellee had her baby! Trent was born this Thursday. Both Mama and baby are doing very well! His very first book was The Little Mouse, The Red, Ripe Strawberry, and the Big Hungry Bear by Don and Audrey Wood because it was his dad’s favorite book. Because Kellee is busy with baby-related things, she will give her reading update next week. I am sure you understand. 🙂

Ricki: This week, I started several books, and because of that, I didn’t finish any of them! Whoops. Henry and I are continuing to scavenge the local libraries to get our hands on every book in Jane Yolen’s Dinosaur series. We read How Do Dinosaurs Go to School? and his dad read a bunch of books to him. Next week, I promise to be better! 

This Week’s Expeditions

Kellee: I am sure Kellee has broken into her children’s book collection, and she will update you all next week!

Ricki: I plan to finish Lisa Delpit’s Other People’s Children this week. It is excellent. I like the controversy behind it, and it is really make me think deeply about the beliefs I hold. I also started Threatened by Eliot Schrefer, which I am really enjoying.

Last Week’s Journeys

Kellee: I finished Far, Far Away!!! I am excited because I finished it, but also because I ended up really, really liking it. I will be honest and say that because of the unique narrator and the unique story, it takes a while to get into it, but once you do it sucks you in. The last 150 pages just flew by!

After the novel, I had a Leo Lionni readathon. My friend, Amanda, let me raid her picture books, and she had a bunch of Leo Lionni that I had never read: Fish is Fish, Cornelius, Frederick, Alexander and the Wind-Up Mouse, Inch by Inch, and It’s Mine! My favorites are probably Cornelius and Alexander and the Wind-Up Mouse.

I then moved on to other picture books she let me borrow: Alphabet City by Stephen T. Johnson, Never Take a Shark to the Dentist by Judi Barrett, Russell the Sheep by Rob Scotton, What Do You Do When Something Wants to Eat You? by Steve Jenkins, and First Dog by J. Patrick Lewis. My favorites were definitely Never Take a Shark to the Dentist, Russell the Sheep, and, of course, What Do You Do When Something Wants to Eat You? (because Steve Jenkins is brilliant).

Ricki: This week, I finished a professional development book called Cultural Literacy: What Every American Needs to Know. I agreed with the idea of cultural literacy but found myself wanting to rip out the pages of several sections. Expect an angry blog post soon. 🙂 I also finished Laurie Halse Anderson’s The Impossible Knife of Memory. Wow. This is a powerful book. I am sure several of you have read this already, but if you haven’t I highly, highly recommend it. Henry and I read a few picture books together (and reread a few old ones). We read Beatrix Potter’s The Tale of Peter Rabbit and The Tale of Squirrel Nutkin. We also read How Do Dinosaurs Learn to Read? by Jane Yolen. I loved this one and just wish it was longer. This dinosaur series is awesome.

This Week’s Expeditions

Kellee: I am still waiting on the baby to grace us with his presence. My plan is definitely all going to change if he comes, but right now I plan on starting The Beginning of Everything by Robyn Schneider. I also have more of Amanda’s picture books to read, as well as some from Candlewick and Bloomsbury that I want to get to.

Ricki: Next week, I plan to start Threatened by Eliot Schrefer. If you follow this blog, you know that Kellee and I are huge fans of this author! Of course, Henry and I will tackle some new picture books. We plan to go to the library this week. My next professional development book is Lisa Delpit’s Other People’s Children. I am pretty excited about this one. Has anyone read it?
