It’s Monday! What Are You Reading? From Picture Books to YA!

It’s Monday! What are you Reading? is a meme hosted by Sheila at Book Journeys. It is a great way to recap what you read and/or reviewed the previous week and to plan out your reading and reviews for the upcoming week. It’s also a great chance to see what others are reading right now…you just might discover the next “must-read” book!

Jen Vincent, of Teach Mentor Texts, and Kellee decided to give It’s Monday! What Are You Reading? a kidlit focus. If you read and review books in children’s literature – picture books, chapter books, middle grade novels, young adult novels, anything in the world of kidlit – join us! We love this meme and think you will, too.

We encourage everyone who participates to support the blogging community by visiting at least three of the other book bloggers that link up and leave comments for them.

Kellee: I am currently celebrating my little sister’s wedding!!!!! I will update you on my reading next week 🙂

I also apologize for not commenting on anyone’s IMWAYR post this week. I will catch up with you all next week.

Ricki: Uh oh. It looks like we might be boring this week!  I finished East of Eden on audio (23 DISCS!). Each year, I try to read or listen to at least one classic text, and I added this book to my #mustreadin2015 list to be sure I got through it. I loved it—but I love everything by Steinbeck. Poor Henry was sick all week, and he wanted to snuggle and read the same ol’ favorites. Luckily, he is better as of yesterday. I just recently agreed to teach a general methods course to mixed-subject pre-service secondary teachers. I’ve spent much of my week perusing texts to use in the course, but I didn’t read any in its entirety, so I won’t list them here.

This Week’s Expeditions

Ricki: I’ve been savoring X as I read professional development texts. Many of you (Beth, especially!) have posted that you love it, and I can’t agree more. This book will definitely be making my Best of 2015 list.

Don’t forget to enter to win Daredevil Duck!

  1. I’m going to have to catch up with some of your reviews-all look good! Love seeing that sweet pic of you & Henry, Kellee. And Ricki, are you finished yet? I have X on my list, too. Happy reading!

  2. Congratulations on your sister’s wedding. I’m glad Henry is feeling better. Something about reading books while snuggled together must be healing. My teenage girl wants to do that when she’s sick.
WOW! On finishing East of Eden. Have you checked out Sync YA’s offerings for free audio books through the summer? They pair a contemporary YA with a classic each week.

  3. Yay – a wedding. What fun. East of Eden is a book that I really enjoyed even though I thought it would be a snooze. 😉 23 discs! Yikes. Glad you made it. Kay mentioned Sync and X is one of the books that will be given away soon. There’s also going to be a webinar interview with Kekla Magoon.

    • I was bummed to see they were offering X because I wanted to read my copy. This year, I have read most of the books they are offering. I suppose that is a good sign! I will listen to a few again, though. It can’t hurt! Thanks for the information about the webinar!

  4. Ha! Thanks for the shout-out Ricki! I guess I am a little overly enthusiastic about it, huh? 🙂

23 discs for East of Eden is still fewer than the 5th Harry Potter, which was a whopping 27! :O

I should make the goal to read at least one classic text per year, but I have abandoned so many of them. People are always shocked that I’m an English teacher and have read so few classic texts. I ironically give them my Bartelby the Scrivener answer: “I prefer not to.” 😛

    • I just burst out laughing. Ahh, Bartelby.

You are enthusiastic with good reason. The book is amazing. I listened to the first Harry Potter and stopped there. Don’t throw things at me, but I am not a huge HP girl.

  5. I periodically decide to improve myself by reading a classic, but I rarely follow through. I don’t think I’ve read more than 5-10 in the 10 years or so it’s been since I finished my PhD. PhD reading burned me out big time. I am pretty happy with my steady diet of YA, PBs, and middle-grade, mixed with the occasionally book for grown-ups! I teach the Specialized Methods course and love it–probably my favorite course to teach. I’ll have it again in fall and I’m excited to start planning! Glad Henry is feeling better!

    • Once I get my PhD, I think I will be more marketable for the specialized Methods course. I am excited for that day! For now, it is General Methods for me. That is okay. I sprinkle the things I WANT to teach amongst that boring (but essential) lesson planning stuff. I have to make sure they remain interested. 🙂
