I finished Garbage Island by Fred Koehler this week, and I am SO EXCITED to share it on Friday!

I am so sorry to abandon everyone for the second Monday in a row! I have a big deadline tomorrow for a writing project, so I’m unable to log all of my titles. I have a bunch of wonderful new books to share and look forward to next week!

I am almost done with both The Dollar Kids and Upside-Down Magic: Weather or Not. They are both ones that I will definitely be sharing with my students. Upside-Down Magic, the series, is so fun, but it really does make kids think about acceptance and empathy, and The Dollar Kids fits right into that same vein (though I look forward to see what the resolution is).

I am not sure what I am going to read next. I have two novels to read for potential review for the blog, one novel to read for ALAN, and at least three novels to read for NCTE! I am excited for all of them! (Though the realization that NCTE and ALAN are 6 weeks away is really hitting home!)

• I finished listening to The Young Elites, and if you have read it you know about the tragedy at the end of the book, and I just don’t know if I want to continue the series with the loss at the end. I just don’t know where the series is going to go. But I guess that is why I also need to read the series….
• I read K.A. Holt’s new book. It comes out next year. You’ll want to read it. I promise!
• AMULET EIGHT CAME OUT!!!!! My students and I have been WAITING for this book, and I will tell you that it does not disappoint, and now we are waiting for #9….

• Currently on Chapter 6 of Winnie-the-Pooh with Jim and Trent. It is so much fun to read, and I love that Trent is loving it!
• I cannot wait to start Upside-Down Magic: Weather or Not which I’ll start on my drive to school today. I love the rest of the series, so I know this one will be no different.
• I started The Dollar Kids this weekend, and I hope I love it as much as Jennie Smith raved about it to me.

• We finished the second Ella and Owen book. Trent loves the dynamics between the two dragons. Like the other three books we read this week, any book with two opposite characters who love each other but also have disagreements is quite entertaining.
• We went and saw a local production of Frog and Toad All Year the play, so I figured I should probably read the book with Trent. We then went to the book store and got all of the Frog and Toad books.
• I want Trent to love Elephant and Piggie as much as I do. He’s finally starting to ask to read their books; I am so excited!
• Trent started t-ball a few weeks ago (hence the being unavailable on Mondays now), and My First Book of Baseball is a great book to read to reinforce what he is learning.
• Reviewing this book on Wednesday–don’t miss out!

This week, I reread When the Moon Was Ours by Anna Marie McLemore to teach it on Monday. My TAs are teaching If I Was Your Girl and The 57 Bus. We are going to talk about Gender and Adolescence and use these three books as talking points. All three books are incredible. When the Moon Was Ours is so lyrical. The magical realism just takes my breath away. It was wonderful to reread. If you haven’t read this book, I recommend it highly.

• Okay, I am finally getting all of the hype around this series. Where I am (about 75% through the book) is pretty crazy suspenseful, and I can’t wait to find out what happens next. I am not sure if it is because I was listening to the audio, that it took a bit just to get sucked into the setting and characters, or something else, but I was struggling with it; however, now I am all in, and I cannot wait to continue listening (and I will finish it this week!).
• Jim bought Trent Winnie the Pooh to start reading together. I can’t resist reading a book Jim picked out, and I’ve never read the original stories, so I am looking forward to it.
• As for reading myself, I don’t know! I just finished the Christopher Healy book (reviewing it on Wednesday), and I haven’t picked anything up yet. I have 5 novels to read for the blog to review before the end of October and  7 novels to read for NCTE in November, so I am not sure what I am going to pick up next.

I am still working on Sadie. It turns out that assigning my classes a lot of different reading and then designing the lessons cuts into my free reading time. 🙂

I am loving the little bookworm Trent is right now! We’ve been reading a a couple of chapters of a chapter books and one or two picture books each night! And he wishes we could do more! I adore this! And I am so amazed at his memory for story, too. We can now have conversations about the books we’re reading, make predictions while reading, and even do a little bit of literary analysis! I won’t share everything we read each week, but I’ll share any new books that we read.

• We need to get the next book in this series by Alexa Pearl! I love Sasha’s story as she learns how she fits into the world.
• Life on Mars by Jon Agee is such a great sci-fi picture book, and we had some great conversation about the martian.
• Over and Under the Snow by Kate Messner was very foreign for my Floridian son, so he had a lot of questions and loved it!
• Ella and Owen: The Dave of AAAAH! DOOM! by Jaden Kent was a fun adventure about two silly dragon siblings who work together to survive!

I read:

• Cosmic Conundrum by Cara Bartek, Ph.D. is the first in a series about Serafina Sterling, a super brilliant 6th grader that mixes sciences and middle school!
• Stella Diaz Has Something to Say by Angela Dominguez was a book that I immediately went to school to talk to my students about because I knew MANY of them would connect with her. Stella doesn’t feel like she fits in anywhere because her family is fluent in Spanish and lived in Mexico while her peers are fluent in English and much louder than her. She is a sweet girl that struggles in both English and Spanish–will she be able to find her voice?

I am excited to share that I have a book under contract with a publisher that I’ve long admired! I can’t wait to share more, but I spent most of my week working on details for the book! 🙂

I REREAD Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin Alire Sáenz for the twelve time (maybe more). I am teaching it tomorrow, and it is one of my favorite books to teach. It offers so much to discuss, and my students always love it.

Henry and I also dipped into some older books that were given to us by a neighbor. They were about forty years old. I am not going to post the titles here, but it has been really interesting to see how books have changed in the last forty years. The implicit bias was a bit disturbing, but it offered some great moments for critical discussions about gender roles and the representations of people of color. I got so irritated with one that it is currently in my recycling bin. I’ll probably take it out in the morning. That wasn’t the best idea, I know.

• I am loving A Perilous Journey of Danger and Mayhem: A Dastardly Plot by Christopher Healy! Just go read the summary of it; you’re going to want to read it, too!
• I am about half way through The Young Elites audiobook, and it is returning in 3 days–I have a feeling I’ll be finishing it the traditional way. The Young Elites reminds me of the Embassy Row series mixed with Graceling series.
• With Trent, we’re reading the second book in the Ella and Owen series. He loves these two dragons!

I am still reading and loving Sadie. I am sorry that I have been lost in some academic work lately that I’ve fallen behind on the good stuff. But this book is amazing!

Journey of the Pale Bear by Susan Fletcher was even better than it sounded! I can’t wait to review it for you!

Another Day by David Levithan was quite interesting because it looked at the exact time frame as Every Day but from Rhiannon’s point of view. I look forward to reading book 3 now to see where it all goes.

I REREAD Piecing Me Together by Renée Watson in preparation to teach it this week. I am really excited to talk about it with my college students. My fingers are crossed that they will love it as much as I do.

My son and I finished our read-aloud of The Super Life of Ben Braver. This book makes an incredible read-aloud for a 4-year-old, even though it is written for upper elementary schoolers, in particular. My son absolutely loved it and can’t wait for the next book to be released in March!

I adored King Ben and Sir Rhino by Eric Sallier and look forward to reviewing it later this week!

I’ve only start The Young Elites (audiobook) but am not far enough to have an opinion quite yet (though I will say it reminds me a bit of Graceling). The others will hopefully be read this week!

I also wanted to extend a formal apology for not stopping by as many blogs on Mondays for the next couple of months (and last couple of weeks) as I always intend to. Trent has started t-ball, and practice is on Mondays, so it really adds another layer of rushing to the first day of the week. If I missed/miss your blog, please know that I love you being part of the community—thank you for being you! You are appreciated.

I am still reading Sadie by Courtney Summers. Ordinarily, this book wouldn’t make it more than a couple of days with me. The suspense is phenomenal. Yet, I am also reading dozens of articles to prepare a manuscript that I am writing, so I am trying to balance my reading.

• Well, last week I didn’t give myself enough credit! I didn’t mention that I did finish Solo by Kwame Alexander. It is our first school book club book, and it is going to be amazing for discussions!
• This week, I finished House of Hades, and we are at the climax of the series, I think! It is ridiculously suspenseful and full of action. I have a few other things to read then I will jump into Blood of Olympus. 
• Vincent and Theo is brilliant. It is a tragic story, but a story full of beautiful brotherly friendship and genius. It is obvious that Deborah Heiligman lives and breathes her subject while she is writing her books. I am also super honored to have been part of the conversation about the hats on the front (check out the note on this inside flap! That was my dad’s idea!).

For some reason, I’ve been starting dozens of books, but I haven’t read more than 100 pages in any book. My nightstand is filled with half-finished books (all books that I loved), but I haven’t finished them. I think I am overwhelmed by the many, really great, recent publications, and I am having trouble committing.

I am teaching American Born Chinese this Wednesday, so I REREAD it for the dozenth time. I love this book.

Henry and I enjoyed Bone Soup by Alyssa Satin Capucilli. I am saving this full review for Halloween! 🙂

This new book, Carlos Santana: Sound of the Heart, Song of the World by Gary Golio, is a stunner. My son was so inspired by it that we sat and listened to music by Carlos Santana afterwards. It was great to introduce him to a phenomenal musician. I liked how the book focused primarily on his younger years. This helped my son feel very attached to Santana’s life.

  • After these two, I have Garbage Island by Fred Koehler to read followed by Another Day and Someday by David Levithan, Stella Diaz Has Something to Say by Angela Dominguez, Just Like Jackie by Lindsey Stoddard, The Dollar Kids by Jennifer Richard Jacobson, and Escape from Aleppo by N.H. Senzai.
  • I am hoping that my ability to read at night without falling asleep really steps up because These are all books I need to read in September. I hope I can do it!
• I started listening to The Young Elites by Marie Lu. It is recommended by any student who reads it, and it is on my #mustreadin2018 list, so I look forward to it.

I just started Sadie by Courtney Summers. I am intrigued.

My teenaged neighbors are raving about this book. Michael Belanger agreed to Skype with my class. I am very excited and started the book last night. So far, it is very good!

I haven’t yet gotten a good balance of work and reading. I’m reading every day but not much because I fall asleep… I’m chugging along, and I know that time will get on my side again soon!

I loved Little Man Little Man by James Baldwin. It is his one book written for young people, and I am so excited that it is being printed. The illustrations and the writing are both stunning. This book is a gift to the world.

 I REREAD If I Ever Get Out of Here by Eric Gansworth. I love this book. After the brave women came forward about Sherman Alexie and I learned more about what he has done with Native authors, I decided to make the switch. This book was a naturally easy choice. My TAs told me they enjoyed reading it even more than True Diary, and I am really looking forward to hearing my students’ reactions tomorrow!

I reread Undocumented: A Worker’s Fight by Duncan Tonatiuh for the second time this week. I love this book—from the words to the illustrations to the accordion-style printing.

LOVING both of these! I think I’ll be able to finish Vincent and Theo by Deborah Heiligman this week (I have about 2 hours left in the audiobook), and I hope to make a dent in The House of Hades.

I am still listening to The Nowhere Girls by Amy Reed. When I first started it, I wasn’t sure if it would be a good audio book. But it kicked into high gear, and it is making for a wonderful listening experience.
