  • The Rumor Game by Dhonielle Clayton & Sona Charaipotra: The authors of Tiny Pretty Things are back with another messed up look at the potential of wildness that can happen in high school, this time all around a rumor. Using multiple formats, including text messages and social media posts, they tell the story of how things can get out of control and change the lives of those involved.
  • Nubia: Real One by L.L. McKinney, Illustrated by Robyn Smith: Nubia is a new-to-me super hero! She is amazing! She can not only kick butt, but she is also a good person willing to fight for her friends and for social justice. I am overall a Marvel fan, but then I read something like this and DC is definitely giving Marvel a run for their money in my book.
  • Glitch by Sarah Graley: Trent got this book out from his school library and when he got done immediately told me I had to read it because it was one of the best graphic novels he had ever read, and I agree it was very good! It has so much that makes a graphic novel fun to read: action, humor, a twist, and colorful illustrations. All of this along with a very interesting video game-based story made for a fun read.
  • Cold War Correspondent by Nathan Hale: Nathan Hale is visiting my school on Friday!!!!! To prepare, I wanted to read his newest, so I had read them all before he came. I cannot wait though I also still have so much to do! This is probably one of my top Hazardous Tales books so far. I love learning new things, and the Korean War is definitely something I don’t know much about; I adored the new narrator–she is so kick butt, and it also included everything I love about the series: humor, history, truth.
  • Something is Killing the Children Vol. 1 by James Tynion, IV: I was trolling Hoopla looking for a new graphic novel to read when I came across this, and the title and cover immediately grabbed me. And rightfully so! The story is gruesome yet intriguing, and I will definitely be reading more!

  • Nina: A Story of Nina Simone by Traci N. Todd, Illustrated by Christian Robinson: I can definitely see why this book was honored by the Coretta Scott King Illustrator Committee. Christian Robinson is so talented with his collage–it is beautiful, invokes an emotional response, and is brilliantly done. Additionally, I am so glad that there is a picture book biography of Nina Simone! She should be talked about more, and I hope this book will help.
  • The Couch Potato by Jory John, Illustrated by Pete Oswald: The newest in this series is a great addition. Each book has a focus that is important for kids, and this one focuses on appreciating nature.
  • Oh Look, A Cake! by J.C. McKee: Quite a funny book in the vein of I Want My Hat Back.
  • The Snurtch by Sean Ferrell, Illustrated by Charles Santoso: This is a picture book that I read with Trent periodically because it addresses those big emotions that sometimes are hard to control that everyone deals with from time to time.

Happy to be back! I haven’t updated since January 3rd, so sorry for the long post!

  • My Brother’s Husband: Volume 2 & Volume 3 by Gengoroh Tagame, translated by Anne Ishii: This manga series is everything you want in a story. Watching Yaichi grow as a person, Kana love Mike unconditionally, and Mike mourn Ryoji filled my heart, and I adored reading their story. I want more.
  • Amethyst: Princess of Gemworld by Shannon & Dean Hale, illustrated by Asiah Fulmore: Gemworld and Amethyst are new members of the DC Comics world to me, so it was great learning about this new world and story. It is definitely a fun and fantastical read.
  • The Goose Egg by Liz Wong was the second read aloud for my UCF class, and Trent was our guest reader.
  • Negative Cat by Sophie Blackall is a book that any cat loving person is going to enjoy reading. It shows the strong personalities of cats, the fierce bond between cat and owner, and how what seems like a negative thing can become positive.

  • Nimona by Noelle Stevenson: This was a reread for me, but I wanted to remind myself why Nimona was one of the best graphic novels, and I did. If you haven’t read this brilliant villainous epic of a graphic novel, you should fix that.
  • Knuffle Bunny: A Cautionary Tale by Mo Willems was my third read aloud to my UCF class because we were discussing illustrations and Knuffle Bunny was used as an example in the textbook.
  • Linked by Gordon Korman: I can definitely see why Linked was honored with the Sydney Taylor Book Award. It deals with the topics of the Holocaust, hate, religion, and acceptance in a different way than I’ve ever read before. And in an engaging, just as you’d expect from Gordon Korman. Also, it was a great multi-cast audiobook!
  • My Bindi by Gita Varadarajan, illustrated by Archana Sreenivasan: This is a great example of a book being a window for a reader. Trent did not know what a bindi was before we read this book, and it was such a perfect introduction as Divya begins wearing bindis to school. I also loved learning more about the meaning behind a bindi.
  • Téo’s Tutu by Maryann Jacob Macias, illustrated by Alea Marley: Téo knows what he loves. He loves to dance and he loves flowy outfits. It doesn’t matter if that doesn’t fit what is expected of him because he knows what he loves. And his parents support him. What a beautiful book.

I finished Black Canary: Breaking Silence by Alexandra Monir. I love this book, which tells the story of DC Icon Black Canary, whose alter ego is Dinah Lance. There are rich themes related to government control, feminist, and social class. Monir reinterprets the story to connect Dinah’s world with that of Monir’s grandmother’s experiences in Iran (although this is not explicitly stated in the book).

This book! Jason Reynolds writes, and Jason Griffin illustrates Ain’t Burned All the Bright. But it is so much more than this. The writing and illustrations work together in an incredibly powerful way. This book was written in a moleskine and begs to be taught in classrooms. I’ve never read a book that was so connected to the current sociopolitical context of the world.

You Are Not Alone by the Alphabet Rockers (Pictures by Ashley Evans) explores the many instances in which children might feel different from others. At the end of each child’s story, the reader states, “You are not alone.” I really loved the repetition of this story. It felt like a song. My kids really enjoyed shouting YOU ARE NOT ALONE at the end of each story, and it really cemented the message in their brains. I would love to read this to a large classroom of students.

I am so sorry, but I am going to take a couple more weeks off. I am just a bit overloaded with everything: just my normal life then never knowing how the day is going to go at school, my new UCF course, writing teaching guides, etc. My reading hasn’t been the best right now either because of everything. Thank you for understanding, and I’ll be back on Mondays soon!

Snow Angel, Sand Angel by Louis-Ann Yamanaka is such a good book. My kids have asked me to read it so many times now. I will be reviewing it in detail this Thursday!

I reread Sisters of the Neversea by Cynthia Leitich Smith for a project that I am doing. My goodness, I love this book so much. It confronts stereotypes and erasure head-on and does so unapologetically. If you haven’t read this book yet, I recommend it highly.

This week, I reread Sisters of the Neversea by Cynthia Leitich Smith. It’s such a clever reinterpretation of the Peter Pan myth. I am very excited to be using it in a paper that I am writing. It is written for a middle grade audience but would be appreciated by readers of all ages.

While we’ve been away, I (Kellee) went on vacation to Colorado, and Ricki and I got to see each other! It was the most wonderful 36 hours with one of my best friends! And the kids had such a blast together! 💖

Kellee

Here’s what I’ve read since I last updated on December 13th:

  • Dragons in a Bag and The Dragon Thief by Zetta Elliott: Oh how I love these books! What a fun concept with great characters that anyone reading is going to fall in love with. I am so looking forward to the third one coming out! (I loved it so much that I added it to my fantasy/sci-fi book club options for my UCF Children’s Lit class!)
  • Brilliant Bea by Shaina Rudolph, Illustrated by Mary Vukadinovich: With ALA Youth Media Awards around the corner, I wanted to get some picture book reading in for eligible Schneider Award picture books, and I was so happy to have found Brilliant Bea. What a great character who shows that dyslexia is more than who anyone is.
  • Another Book About Bears by Laura Bunting, Illustrated by Philip Bunting: I thought this humor was on point, so I look forward to reading more from this duo (I checked out their website and there are so many to choose from!).
  • Last Gate of the Emperor by Kwame Mbalia and Prince Joel Makonnen: What a fantastic futuristic adventure! I loved how the setting played its own part in the story, the humor that shone throughout, and the character development throughout. I was also lucky enough to write the teaching guide for it which was such a delight!

  • Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Big Shot by Jeff Kinney: I always read the new Diary of a Wimpy Kid, usually around Thanksgiving, but I hadn’t this year; I am glad I could squeeze it in before the end of the year! (I also want to commend Jeff Kinney for realizing that Greg and Rowley had a toxic relationship and moving away from including it.)
  • My Brother’s Husband by Gengoroh Tagame: Loved loved loved this story about a single Japanese father who meets his deceased twin brother’s husband for the first time. He must fight his own prejudice and learn to love his brother for who he was.
  • Smaller Sister by Maggie Edkins Willis: This is a graphic novel you are going to want in your libraries! It is a story of sisterhood as well as body image, anorexia, and disordered eating. It is done so tactfully and within a story that any reader will connect with.
  • Sayonara Football Vol. 2 by Naoshi Arakawa: Volume 1 ended in such an odd way, I am glad volume 2 picked up right where it left off and cleared things up for me. I think this is going to be a hit manga in my school.
  • The Snow Fell Three Graves Deep by Allan Wolf: Allan Wolf is a genius. Have you read anything by him yet? If not, fix that. This one or his Titanic novel are brilliant. The way he tackles topics, does research to immerse himself, and can tell stories from so many points of view is just so all encompassing. I mean, some of the points of view in this book, which is about the Donner Party, is from hunger (literal and figurative) and from oxen–it was fascinating to read!

  • A Night to Die For by Lisa Schroeder: A murder mystery thriller that kept me guessing, and I couldn’t believe the reveal when it was shared. Fans of Karen McManus, Holly Jackson, and Kara Thomas will want to pick this one up!
  • Shuri by Nic Stone: It is great to see Shuri get her own novel, and it is quite the adventure!
