Tricked by Jen CalonitaSwitched by Jen CalonitaWished by Jen CalonitaClose Encounters of the Nerd Kind by Kim Harrington

  • Tricked, Switched, & Wished (Fairy Tale Reform School #3, 4, & 5) by Jen Calonita: Still really enjoying this fractured fairy tale series. Fans of Whatever After and Land of Stories are going to love it–make sure you grab it for your fairy tale fans! I’m excited to get to the finale.
  • Close Encounters of the Nerd Kind (Gamer Squad #2) by Kim Harrington: Trent and I are listening to this series, and I really liked the first one, but I loved the second one. Smart how Harrington twisted up the storyline, and now that we know the characters, we are even more invested. Onto the last one!

The Cobalt Prince by Mark SiegelThe Red Maze by Mark SiegelThe Amber Anthem by Mark Siegel

  • The Cobalt PrinceThe Red Mazeand The Amber Anthem (5 Worlds #2, 3, & 4) by Mark Siegel & Alexis Seigel, illustrated by Xanthe Bouma, Matt Rockefeller, & Boya Sun: I am so glad that Trent talked me into rereading the first three books in this series and finishing up the whole thing. It is so epic! If you do not have this series yet for your graphic novel and fantasy fans, I highly recommend it!

I also went on a picture book read streak, so I have quite a few to share!

My Pet Feet by Josh FunkThere's a Unicorn in Your Book by Tom FletcherOnly One by Deborah HopkinsonThe Path by Bob StaakeJust Like Jesse Owens by Andrew Young

  • My Pet Feet by Josh Funk, illustrated by Billy Yong: Josh Funk is just so darn clever, and this picture book is unlike any by him or anyone else. I love it so much, and I cannot wait for everyone to have fun with this book!
  • There’s a Unicorn in Your Book by Tom Fletcher, illustrated by Greg Abbott: We have other books in this series, so Trent was so excited to see this new one. Fletcher and Abbott do a good job at keeping the series similar yet adding in little twists to make each book unique.
  • Only One by Deborah Hopkinson, illustrated by Chuck Groenink: A beautiful message about our beautiful Earth. (Ricki’s review)
  • The Patby Bob Staake: This book is lyrically beautiful, the illustrations are so calm yet expressive, and it is in 2nd person! It also is a wonderful introduction to to extended metaphors (path = life).
  • Just Like Jesse Owen by Andrew Young & Paula Young Shelton, illustrated by Gordon C. James: I loved this transfer of oral history from father to daughter to us. It is meant to be read out loud and Gordon C. James brought the history to life through his (as always) brilliancy.

I'm Growing Great by Mechal Renee RoeBlast Off! by Suzanne SladeBuild! by Red Nose StudioOnce Upon a Forest by Pam FongSunflower Sisters by Monika Singh Gangotra

  • I’m Growing Great by Mechal Renee Roe: Illustrations 5 stars! I LOVE THEM! The text was so positive though it just didn’t flow as well as I’d like, and I was annoyed by the lower case “i” throughout. It will definitely will be as popular as Happy Hair and Cool Cuts.
  • Blast Off: How Mary Sherman Morgan Fueled America into Space by Suzanne Slade, illustrated by Sally W. Comport: It makes me both sad and excited when I learn about a new marginalized person from history that changed our world yet has not had the opportunity to be known. Mary Sherman was the first female rocket scientist and changed the history of her profession. I am so glad I got to learn about her in this beautiful book.
  • Build! by Red Nose Studio: Oh man, construction loving young kids are going to LOVE this book! And the found object illustrations are so great!
  • Once Upon a Forest by Pam Fong: I can see why Ricki had to review this book. This wordless picture book is so cute, uses color so purposefully, and has a wonderful message. (Ricki’s review)
  • Sunflower Sisters by Monika Singh Gangotra, illustrated by Michaela Dias-Hayes: What beautiful illustrations and message!

Time Capsule by Lauren RednissA Blue Kind of Day by Rachel TomlinsonNot Enough Lollipops by Megan MaynorDarryl's Dream by Darryl DMC McDanielsBlue by Nana Ekua Brew-Hammond

  • Time Capsule by Lauren Redniss: Great back matter to add onto the sparse text around a time capsule. Use as a read aloud and guide to making a time capsule!
  • A Blue Kind of Day by Rachel Tomlinson, illustrated by Tori-Jay Mordey: This book 💙 I was a child with depression (and now an adult with depression), and this book is something I wish had existed so many years ago because I would have found myself in it. I think this book is going to change lives.
  • Not Enough Lollipops by Megan Maynor, illustrated Micah Player: A great lesson in cooperation and generosity using items that students will understand.
  • Darryl’s Dream by Darryl DMC McDaniels, illustrated by Tristan Tait: I loved reading DMC’s story. It is about passion and following what you love to succeed. And it is told in a fun way with colorful illustrations that fit the book perfectly!
  • Blue: A History of the Color as Deep as the Sea and as Wide as the Sky by Nana Ekua Brew-Hammond, illustrated Daniel Minter: What. A. Beautiful. Book! I didn’t know I needed a history of a color, but I am so glad it exists! And the back matter is just an awesome addition.

How to Hear the Universe by Patricia ValdezPeople Are Wild by Margaux MeganckMore Than Peach by Bellen WoodardWhere's My Cat by Seymour ChwastI'd Like to Be the Window for a Wise Old Dog by Philip C. Stead

  • How to Hear the Universe: Gaby González and the Search for Einstein’s Ripples in Space-Time by Patricia Valdez, illustrated by Sara Palacios: The math and science within this book is so deep; however, I loved learning about the connection between Einstein and González and modern technology. Another amazing female scientist that hopefully more people will know about now!
  • People are Wild by Margaux Meganck: I am a huge fan of this twist on perspective. Great mentor text to talk about point of view and perspective.
  • More Than Peach by Bellen Woodard, illustrated by Fanny Liem: I loved learning about the first Crayon activist!
  • Where’s My Cat? by Seymour Chwast: This book seems simple, but it is so much more than meets the eye, specifically if used in an art class. And it is silly—kids will love it!
  • I’d Like to Be the Window for a Wise Old Dog by Philip C. Stead: I’m a fan of this Stead book! It’ll be an amazing mentor text to imitate the poetic style and also to get students thinking creatively. And always with beautiful illustrations.

With Lots of Love by Jenny Torres SanchezThis Is the Tree We Planted by Kate McMullanMy Shadow Is Purple by Scott StuartElefantastic! by Jane Yolen

  • With Lots of Love by Jenny Torres Sanchez, illustrated by Andres Ceolin: What a beautiful story about a love between a granddaughter and her grandmother! Readers will also connect with Rocio’s moving and finding home.
  • This is the Tree We Planted by Kate McMullan, illustrated by Alison Friend: Play on The House That Jack Built & would be a good mentor text for students to make their own. I do wish there had been back matter to take it all to the next level.
  • My Shadow is Purple by Scott Stuart: Yes! Challenge those gender roles/norms/stereotypes!!!! I love this book for now!
  • Elefantastic!: A Story of Magic in 5 Acts: Light Verse on a Heavy Subject by Jane Yolen, illustrated by Brett Helquist: I love Jane Yolen’s writing, and this one has great word play that I can admire; however, I am very anti adopting wild animals and although this book ends with the elephant going to a sanctuary, I think it misses the mark of what it could be when it comes to a lesson about wild animals and sanctuaries and habitats. There just needed to be more.

These three recent/upcoming releases are all fantastic.

Sabina Hahn’s Pineapple Princess is about a girl who demands to be princess over her kingdom. She makes a pineapple hat, but her subjects (the flies) are NOT cooperating or listening to her.

School Is Wherever I Am by Ellie Peterson reinforces the important message that school is everywhere—not just inside a building with “school” on the sign. I liked this book a lot, and it is a great message to children (and adults!).

Blue Baboon Finds Her Tune is the newest publication by the duo who wrote Snatchabook (Helen Docherty and Thomas Docherty). It’s about a baboon who is eager to play with friends, but a monsoon threatens to ruin her fun. There are great rhymes in this book, and it is a great read aloud!

I am almost done listening to All My Rage by Sabaa Tahir.

I have 50 pages left of Wake: The Hidden History of Women-Led Slave Revolts by Rebecca Hall. I can’t bring myself to finish it because then it will be over. So it travels with me around the house, and I read a couple of pages at a time. Does anyone else do this with books that are really, really good?

Finding Orion by John David AndersonFlunked by Jen CalonitaCharmed by Jen Calonita

  • Finding Orion by John David Anderson: I love John David Anderson books! It is so amazing how each of his books are different yet so much fun to read. Finding Orion was a quirky realistic fiction story about Orion’s odd family and a quest they must go on after Rion’s grandfather dies. The family learns more than they expect on the quest. I can’t wait to discuss this book with my 7th grade book club.
  • Flunked Charmed (Fairy Tale Reform School) by Jen Calonita: Fans of Land of Stories and Whatever After will definitely love this series. Gilly just wants to help her family, but that meant stealing, so when she was caught the third time, she is sent to Fairy Tale Reform School which begins an adventure she could have never imagined.

Frizzy by Claribel A. OrtegaRide On by Faith Erin HicksThe Sand Warrior by Mark Siegel

  • Frizzy by Claribel A. Ortega, illustrated by Rose Bousamra: This story felt so real to me: the friendship between Marlene and Camila reminds me of so many BFFs I’ve taught, how mean kids like to point out Marlene’s differences is sadly too common in middle school, Marlene’s struggle with her identity versus what our society expects, and Marlene’s struggle to be true with her mom is something most middle schoolers struggle with. But luckily, this book is about self love, and I. Love. Books. About. Self. Love! And Bousamra’s illustrations just brough Ortega’s story to life! I will definitely get this for my students.
  • Ride On by Faith Erin Hicks: Ride On is about figuring out one’s place as they fall out with friends who may not have the same goals as them and finding new friends that are accepting with all aspects of you, and how this is okay! So much of this felt true when it comes to middle school friendships. Oh, and all of this is surrounded by horses and riding competitions (and a little bit of sci-fi love!). Another gem by Hicks!
  • Five Worlds: The Sand Warrior by Mark Siegel & Alexis Siegel, illustrated by Xanthe Bouma & Matt Rockefeller: Trent was given this series by his librarian, and when he finished, he was flabbergasted that I’d only read the first 3 of the series and hadn’t finished it, so I promised him that I would reread the first ones then finish it so we can talk, and I liked the book just as much the second time as I did the first time!

Frieren by Kanehito YamadaAlice in the Country of Hearts, Vol. 1 by QuinRoseOrange by Ichigo Takano

  • Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End, Vol. 1 by Kanehito Yamada, illustrated by Tsukasa Abe: The first volume of this fantasy manga sucked me–I hope my library will get some more volumes! Frieren is an elf mage who will outlive everyone she is close with, so she has to find a purpose for her life.
  • Alice in the Kingdom of Hearts, Vol. 1 by QuinRose, illustrated by Soumei Hoshino: What a dark and twisted Alice in Wonderland story! The concept starts a lot like the original story, but that is really where the comparisons, other than character names, ends and all the twists and turns begin!
  • I’ve Been Killing Slime for 3000 Years and Maxed Out My Level, Vol. 1 by Kisetsu Morita, illustrated by Benio: Another fun fantasy quest series which I hope to read more of! Azusa just wants to live a peaceful life, but overtime, she has become over powered and now people will not leave her alone. What is she going to do now?
  • Orange: Future by Ichigo Takano: I loved Orange, and I had no idea that there was a sequel to the original series which shows us what happened to the characters in the future. It overall made my heart so happy!

Astra Lost in Space, Vol. 1 by Kenta ShinoharaAstra Lost in Space, Vol. 2 by Kenta Shinohara彼方のアストラ 3 [Kanata no Astra 3] by Kenta ShinoharaAstra Lost in Space, Vol. 4 by Kenta Shinohara彼方のアストラ 5 [Kanata no Astra 5] by Kenta Shinohara

  • Astra: Lost in Space Vol. 1-5 by Kenta Shinohara: My library clerk and I devoured this series–it was so, so, so good! I think I can say that it is one of my favorite sci-fi series ever. The concept is intriguing (a group of students on an interstellar field trip get abandoned in space) and that is just the beginning of so much. Highly recommend!

The House in the Cerulean Sea by T.J. Klune

  • The House in the Cerulean Sea by TJ Klune: This book is unlike any other book that I have ever read. It is so full of heart, has a wonderful plot, and has a much deeper meaning than it seems at first. And everyone in the book is so loveable. I mean, who cannot love a green amorphous blob that wants to be a bell hop or a gnome that is obsessed with gardening?!?! I love Klune’s writing–it is such a pleasure to read! I can see why this book has so much hype.

The Bruce Swap by Ryan T. HigginsOur Planet! There's No Place Like Earth by Stacy McAnultyNot Quite Narwhal by Jessie SimaPerfectly Pegasus by Jessie SimaBloom by Ruth FormanThe National Menagerie of Art by Thaïs Vanderheyden

  • Bruce Swap by Ryan T. Higgins: I couldn’t believe we’d missed a Bruce book! So happy to have realized it and fixed it because all of the Bruce books are so good!
  • Our Planet! There’s No Place Like Earth by Stacy McAnulty, illustrated by David Litchfield: Although I don’t believe this book is part of the Our Universe series, it fits right in as it is told from Earth’s point of view, teaches the reader throughout the book, and even has a bit of humor. This one makes sure the reader understands how important our planet it and taking care of it–a great way to discuss global warming with kids.
  • Not Quite Narwhal and Perfectly Pegasus by Jessie Sima: When we saw Perfectly Pegasus at the book store, we were so excited that Jessie Sima had written a new book. Then to read it and find out that Kelp is in the new book also just made it that much better, so we definitely had to reread Not Quite Narwhal. Both books have great messages of family and found family.
  • Bloom by Ruth Forman, illustrated by Talia Skyles: BEAUTIFUL! Each girl-presenting girl in this book blooms just like the flowers that surrounds them. No matter their looks, hair, clothes, etc., they are beautiful and are a force. And the art! Wow. The soft tone just invites the readers into the spreads.
  • The National Menagerie of Art: Masterpieces from Vincent Van Goat to Lionhardo Da Stinki by Thaïs Vanderheyden: What a fun book! If I was an art teacher, well any teacher!, I would want this in my classroom ASAP! Vanderheyden does a fabulous job creating parodies of classic pieces of art, all with animals. Both Trent and my favorite is definitely “Pandamonium!” And the addition of the backmatter with information about the original pieces of art brings it all together.

A student lent me a copy of Dare to Disappoint: Growing Up in Turkey by Özge Samanci. The mixed media within this book is absolutely captivating. I was really impressed with it and plan to use it with my classes to examine the ways in which narratives are told graphically and nontraditionally. It is a phenomenal text.

I’ve read the prose version of Juliet Takes a Breath by Gabby Rivera, so I was really excited to read the graphic novel version with Celia Moscote. I was not disappointed. Juliet’s story is beautifully captured in this graphic version. For me, this book is almost a love letter to readers—to be proud of themselves and believe in themselves. I love this story so much and will read it again and again.

One-Punch Man, Vol. 2 by ONEワンパンマン 3 [Wanpanman 3] by ONERed Panda & Moon Bear by Jarod RosellóRed Panda & Moon Bear by Jarod RosellóSearch for the Swan Maiden by Todd Calgi GallicanoWish by Barbara O'Connor

  • One-Punch Man Vol. 2 & Vol. 3 by One: I was worried that this series was going to be repetitive, but the character development and change of conflict in each manga has kept me wanting to read. This is definitely a manga series I’m going to get for my school library.
  • Red Panda and Moon Bear and Red Panda and Moon Bear: The Curse of the Evil Eye by Jarod Roselló: Who wouldn’t love to read about two siblings that are fighting evil to keep peace in their neighborhood?! It is so fun! And I loved that there isn’t another graphic novel series I can compare it too–it is so unique.
  • Search for the Swan Maiden by Tod Calgi Gallicano: This is the third in the Sam London trilogy, and it had so many feels in it, and I cannot share any of them with you because it will spoil this and the past books, but trust me–all of you Riordan fans, pick up this trilogy!
  • Wish by Barbara O’Connor: WHY DID I WAIT SO LONG TO READ THIS BOOK?!? I am so glad that my 6th grade book club chose to read this book; I loved every second of reading it. It reminds me a bit of One for the Murphys by Lynda Mullaly Hunt, which I also loved. Such a special book!

Adult

The Storyteller by Dave Grohl

  • The Storyteller by Dave Grohl: Wow. You know all of the posts you’ve seen about how good this book is? Well, they are all true. And I highly recommend the audiobook because it is lovely to be read to by Dave Grohl. I loved that this book was about life that just happens to be of a rock star.
