It’s Monday! What are you Reading? is a meme hosted by Sheila at Book Journeys. Last Week’s Journeys
Kellee: This is not going to be a very exciting update folks. We’re going through some really rough sleeping stuff over here with Trent, so I have been going to bed much earlier knowing that I will be woken up over and over again all night (if you are friends with me on Facebook, I am sure you’ve seen the updates!). I have read hardly anything at all this week! Stinks because I really love summer for all the reading time!! Here’s hoping this week is better!
Ricki: This week, I finished the wonderful, fantastic Circus Mirandus by Cassie Beasley. What a treat! Last week, I compared it to another favorite, A Snicker of Magic by Natalie Lloyd. I enjoyed every second of that book. Usually, I give my books away after I read them, but I am hanging onto this one. It is going to be an epic bedtime read for my son when he is a bit older. I also read Henry’s Freedom Box by Ellen Levine. This is a heart-wrenching picture book about Henry “Box” Brown, who escaped slavery in the Underground Railroad.
This Week’s Expeditions
Kellee: Who knows! I may switch to something shorter just to feel successful. I also am listening to a book, but have not been driving much, so I may find a shorter audiobook to feel successful there too. I’ll let you know how it goes next week!
Ricki: I am continuing to truck along with my philosophy book from the early 1900s. I’d like to tackle more books on my #mustreadin2015 list, but I am also intrigued by the new book, The Sacred Lies of Minnow Bly by Stephanie Oakes. This is why I get behind on my must read list!

I’m the only one who found Circus Mirandus overly sad! I couldn’t give my ARC away. My students all recoiled at the word “circus”! Maybe something bad went on locally?! As for sleeping, I think my 17 year old would sleep until noon everyday. It happens eventually, but is hard while you aren’t getting enough sleep!
I am going to read it soon, so I will let you know what I think.
My students actually loved Circus Galacticus, so I don’t think circus bothers them.
Soon hopefully Trent will be sleeping more–hopefully!
I am gathering that you don’t love sad books. I didn’t find it to be overly sad, but I certainly see how someone would think so. I think the magic outweighed the sadness for me.
So sorry you are going through some sleeping difficulties with Trent, Kellee – everyone goes through that at some point. I think ours were at a bit older age, when he was in a bed and kept getting up. “Crying it out” was the toughest thing we ever did! Just know it will pass. Hope you get to some reading this week.
I have heard such great things about Circus Mirandus, Ricki! Can’t wait to read it.

Kellee–Good luck with the sleep stuff. My sister has been going through that with my niece lately. Tough stuff! I hope Trent gets back on track soon. Ricki–I need to get my hands on Circus Mirandus. It looks fabulous. I also understand getting behind on your must read list. I get so interested in all the new books and then have a hard time getting caught up with all the books I already own. Have a great reading week!
Thank you Andrea! Hopefully it fixes itself soon. I wouldn’t even mention it, but it is going on and on and it is really messing with my reading so I felt I needed to share so you all knew why I wasn’t reading.
How old is your niece?
I’m so sorry Kellee about your lack of sleep. These are the hardest times in parenting I think. We once tried to let our oldest ‘cry it out.’ I couldn’t stand it and just brought him into our bed with me. This helped soothe him and eventually he learned to sleep on his own again. Best wishes.
Ricki, So many people are saying such terrific stuff about Circus Mirandus! I’m starting to become jealous of everyone who has read it! I should be getting it from the public library soon, as it has finally arrived there. Now I’m worried that my expectations will be so high, the darn book will never be able to live up to them!

Read short books, especially if you’ve caught yourself in between big books. Try J.K. Rowling’s Very Good Lives. It’s a speech but it’s in book format so it counts. Plus, it’s nor filler.
I love both A Snicker of Magic and Circus Mirandus.
