It’s Monday! What Are You Reading? From Picture Books to YA!

It’s Monday! What are you Reading? is a meme hosted by Sheila at Book Journeys. It is a great way to recap what you read and/or reviewed the previous week and to plan out your reading and reviews for the upcoming week. It’s also a great chance to see what others are reading right now…you just might discover the next “must-read” book!

Jen Vincent, of Teach Mentor Texts, and Kellee decided to give It’s Monday! What Are You Reading? a kidlit focus. If you read and review books in children’s literature – picture books, chapter books, middle grade novels, young adult novels, anything in the world of kidlit – join us! We love this meme and think you will, too.

We encourage everyone who participates to support the blogging community by visiting at least three of the other book bloggers that link up and leave comments for them.

 Last Week’s Journeys

Kellee: I finished two books this week and they both were 5 star reads–I love weeks like that! First, I finished listening to Ocean at the End of the Lane by Neil Gaiman. I found this book to be more along the line of his Coraline and other children’s books than his adult books and I adored the magical world he made. I will also say that I am biased a bit, because I listened to the audiobook and I love listening to Gaiman (who narrated).  The other book I read I may have liked even more; I cannot stop raving about it–Life in Outer Space by Melissa Keil. It is such a good book and I cannot believe that this book hasn’t been talked about more and that I hadn’t heard about it until recently.  I plan on reviewing it soon for you all.

Ricki: This week, I dipped into the classic children’s books. I read The Cat in the Hat by Dr. Seuss and The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle. I enjoyed rereading these, as I haven’t read them since I was a child. I felt compelled to research Dr. Seuss’s life a bit more because I was so impressed by his language. I also read On the Night You Were Born  by Nancy Tillman and Where the Deep Ones Are by Kenneth Hite. Both were enjoyable, but I liked the classics more.

This Week’s Expeditions

Kellee: I am quite excited about both of the books I am starting. First, I am going to start listening to Courage Has No Color this week. As always, since I am car pooling, it will take a bit to finish, but I know I am going to enjoy it. I also started Two Boys Kissing by David Levithan. If it is anywhere as good as the other books I’ve read of his, I know it is going to be fantastic.

Ricki: This week, I will definitely finish Winger by Andrew Smith. I am at a REALLY good part. It makes me look forward to my nursing sessions. I also hope to finish Pedagogy of the Oppressed by Paulo Freire. This one is good, but very dense! Has anyone else read it?

  1. Are you reading Pedagogy to your baby? That’s a jump from The Very Hungry Caterpillar! I want to see what Life in Outer Space is all about now. It’s great when you “discover” a book. Maybe now it’ll be read more!

    • Hahaha. I have read a few pages aloud to him, but usually I read Winger to him. Neither are appropriate, but he still stares at me while I read them. I am equally excited about LIfe in Outer Space. I was bummed I couldn’t get it on my Kindle. It is easier to read e-books while holding the baby. This one may be worth the hard copy!

  3. Kellee – I listened to The Ocean at the End of the Lane, too, and LOVED Gaiman as a reader. I haven’t heard of the Outer Space one. Ricki – it’s nice not to forget the classics! They are classics for a reason. 🙂

  4. Happy to hear you’re both enjoying your books! You’re right, Kellee, I haven’t heard of Life In Outer Space at all-will look for your review. And Ricki, you have lots of good old picture books to look forward to! Fun to start your own collection! See if you can find ‘Freight Train’, a favorite in those early months!

  5. Kellee–will you have access to book while reading Courage Has No Color? The photos added a lot to my reading of it. Life in Outer Space sounds super fun! Rikki–hooray for those classic kid titles. Lots of fun to revisit your childhood favorites as you gear up to read them with your own kids.

I adored both of your upcoming picture book reviews! Have a great week!

    • Lorna, Kellee actually texted me about Life in Outer Space, so I knew it had to be a good one. When I get a text, I move it to the top of my TBR list. 🙂 I did have a lot of fun revisiting childhood this week. Have a great reading week!

    • I haven’t read many Naiman adult books, but I really enjoyed his Sandman series. I know about his adult books (and have read other Ocean reviews) which made me feel comfortable enough to say that it isn’t like his other adult books.
All of Gaiman’s books are narrated by him–so enjoyable!
