Last Week’s Journeys

Kellee: I almost read all that I planned on reading. I did finish Adele Griffin’s Loud Awake and Lost and I read most of girlchild by Tupelo Hassman and The Season of the Witch by Mariah Fredericks. I hardly ever read more than one book at a time and I actually think trying to do so made me read them both slower than I would have if I’d just focused on one. I actually hope I will finish them very soon!

Ricki: I had a great reading week and read five books! I read two YA books: If You Find Me by Emily Murdoch (this one was EXCELLENT, and I highly recommend it) and The Last Summer of the Death Warriors by Francisco X. Stork (this was a reread for a class I am observing, and I loved it just as much this time around).

I also read three children’s picture books: Crow Call by Lois Lowry (beautifully written), Ballet for Martha by Jan Greenberg and Sandra Jordan (a great nonfiction book), and Halloween Hustle by Charlotte Gunnufson (a fun, literary Halloween book). 

This Week’s Expeditions

Kellee: After I finish the two books I’ve started, I have 3 piles of picture books: one of 3 fiction picture books that Candlewick was kind enough to send me, one of National Geographic books that I received and am so excited to leave, and finally a pile of 7 Seymour Simon nonfiction books. PHEW! It’ll be an awesome picture book reading week. 

Ricki: I just started Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell. I am pretty excited about it, and so far, it is great. I am not sure where I will head after that, but it is a hefty one, so that may be it for this week. The baby is coming in five weeks, and I need to get some of my long-term projects for graduate school completed, so I am ready to devote 100% of my time to him.

Last Week’s Journeys

Kellee: I’ve had a pretty great reading week! I read two novels, a nonfiction book, and a picture book… not bad 🙂 The two novels I read were quite different: My Sister Jodie by Jacqueline Wilson was a realistic fiction novel about two sisters trying to find themselves and Gorgeous by Paul Rudnick. The nonfiction book was called Encyclopedia Horrifica and I can see why so many of my students are drawn to it. Finally, for our Halloween review, I read Halloween Hustle by Charlotte Gunnufson.

Ricki: This week was a busy, busy week for me. I had to finish midterms and then I had my baby shower. 🙂 I read the manuscript of In This Moment by Wendy Glenn on www.swoonreads.com (a Macmillan website). It was fantastic. If you like meaningful, quality YA romances, this is a great book for you. My review will be up next week. I am just about done with Hetty Feather by Jacqueline Wilson. It is such a fun story. I can’t wait for Kellee’s and my double review this week!

This Week’s Expeditions

Kellee: Gorgeous was the first book in my 4 books pile in preparation for the ALAN Workshop. Next is girlchild by Tupelo Hussman followed by Loud Awake and Lost by Adele Griffin then Season of the Witch by Mariah Fredericks. I hope to finish them all this week! *Fingers Crossed*

Ricki: As I get more and more exhausted, my reading seems to fall. I have wondered if I should start reading my YA books to my belly. I may start with Halloween Hustle, which will be our Halloween review book. I also want to start If You Find Me by Emily Murdoch. I have heard it is quite good. Has anyone read this one yet?

Last Week’s Journeys

Kellee: This last week I finished Doll Bones (SO GOOD!). Once I got into it, I couldn’t stop. I then did some rereading in preparation for this week’s reviews: Chatswood Spooks #1 & #2 and Scaredy Squirrel Prepares for Halloween. Finally, I started My Sister Jodie by Jacqueline Woodson and I look forward to finishing it.

Ricki: This week, I read The Declaration by Gemma Malley. I love dystopians, and I have always wanted to read this one, so I was excited when it was assigned in a Methods class I am observing. I decided to read it along with the students because it seemed like the perfect opportunity. My reading group loved it. I also read Reality Boy by A. S. King. She is phenomenal, isn’t she? I loved this book as much as I loved her others, and look for the review this Thursday!

This Week’s Expeditions

Kellee: This week I plan to finish My Sister Jacqueline. I then plan on reading Encyclopedia Horrifica then Halloween Hustle in preparation for more scary reviews. After that I have a pile of four books to read for ALAN and cannot wait to read them: Gorgeous by Paul Rudnick, girlchild by Tupelo Hassman, Loud Awake and Lost by Adele Griffin, and Season of the Witch by Mariah Fredericks. They should last me a couple of weeks 🙂

Ricki: This week, I also plan to read Halloween Hustle in preparation for our Halloween review day. I got caught up in books this past week, but I am definitely excited to get to Hetty Feather by Jacqueline Wilson. Also, I just started a book by my advisor, Wendy Glenn. It is awesome so far (and I say that without bias—it is very engaging, and I can’t wait for bedtime to get back to it!). You can get the manuscript for free at www.swoonreads.com.

Last Week’s Journeys

Kellee: I started Doll Bones and am really liking it yet. Still in the exposition (loving the kids!), but love how it is written. I also read the picture books we’re reviewing this week: Scary Places Map Book, Night Horse, Now Open the Box. The Scary Places Map Book was a reread and I just love how fun it is—I look forward to sharing it and the others with you this week.

Ricki: This week, I read Man Made Boy by Jon Skovron. High school English Teachers will particularly love the connections this one has with Frankenstein, The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, and classic mythology. Check out my post on Thursday for more information about the book!

This Week’s Expeditions

Kellee: I am going to finish Doll Bones, and then my next book is My Sister Jodie  by Jacqueline Wilson. Jacqueline Wilson is a well-loved UK MG author and I look forward to being introduced to her. [I still haven’t worked on my presentations for NCTE yet, so I need to get on those too!]

Ricki: I am going to read Now Open the Box by Dorothy Kunhardt, a classic children’s book that has been republished, and then I am going to read Jacqueline Wilson’s Hetty Feather. Kellee and I are excited to read and learn about this beloved author. I also started reading the ARC of Reality Boy by A.S. King. I am hoping to finish that by the end of the week. So far, it is incredibly good!

Last Week’s Journeys

Kellee: This week I was so excited to read Anubis Speaks! A Guide to the Afterlife by the Egyptian God of Death by Vicky Alvear Scheter. I am blessed to have some amazing friends who know I love mythology and made my acquisition of this book possible before its release—I am a very lucky girl! I cannot wait to share this book with you all.

I’ll tell you what, many people talk about how when they are sick, they spend time reading books, but when I am sick, I just veg in front of the TV and sleep which really hurts my reading. This is the second time this school year (ALREADY!) that I’ve been sick and it is getting old; hopefully it is all uphill from here!  [Also, being sick makes me miss audiobooks because I would have at least gotten some listening done, but carpooling is worth missing out on them. Kind of.]

Ricki: This week, I finished listening to Annexed by Sharon Dogar. It was a great book and very interesting, but I wish I had read it. It was quite depressing, and it made driving to and from school a sad experience (for two weeks). I learned a lot about Anne Frank from this different perspective (while it is considered a historical fiction, I know it is grounded in a lot of research).

I read The Spectacular Now by Tim Tharp in preparation for my viewing of the movie. 🙂 It was very good, and I found it to be quite similar to The Catcher in the Rye. I also read Forgive Me, Leonard Peacock by Matthew Quick. This is a very, very good book. If you aren’t aware, it is about a boy who plans to shoot his ex-best-friend and then himself. I found it to be a very important text that should be available in all classrooms.

This Week’s Expeditions

Kellee: I have a to-read list and next up is Doll Bones by Holly Black. I am really looking forward to finally reading it!  I also need to do some research because NCTE is getting really close and I need to work on my presentations. Next weekend, we are also going to go visit my grandfather and family who is visiting him. This will take away from my reading time, but I hope to have enough time to make a dent in my to-read list. 

Ricki: My husband and I are listening to The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks in the car together. We have listened to two (out of ten) CDs, but I am thinking we won’t be finished for a very long time. This is his first audiobook.

I just started Man Made Boy by Jon Skovron. I am hoping to finish it for a post this Thursday. I know–I am cutting it close! But it is great so far, so I think I can do it! I am reading a lot of neat articles about the purposes of educating teachers for my doctoral program. This is intended to prepare me to write a philosophy of teacher education. It is interesting because it is forcing me to examine what is most important to me, in regards to the education of teachers.

Guess who got the new Kindle Paperwhite for her birthday? I am a very lucky woman. I love my husband. 🙂

Last Week’s Journeys

Kellee: This last week, I had the pleasure of reading The Real Boy by Anne Ursu. I can see now why everyone is raving about the book; it deserves all of the recognition it is getting. Although it was a single book week, it was a wonderful single book!

Ricki: This week, I listened to the I Am the Messenger audiobook. I love Markus Zusak, and I really thought I would love this one. I found the storyline to be very sweet and the book’s message to be good, but it felt a bit slow to me. Ed’s adventures became a bit repetitive for me, and perhaps I would have enjoyed the book more if I wasn’t listening to it.

This Week’s Expeditions

Kellee: This week I plan on reading Jedi Academy by Jeffrey Brown. I actually saw a student reading this at school and began talking to her about Jeffrey Brown books. When she found out I hadn’t read this one, she brought it to me when she finished so I could borrow it. I look forward to talking to her about it.

I also have a pile of picture books we are going to review soon that I want to read and I cannot wait! The pile includes Penguin on Vacation and Bogart and Vinnie—both picture books I have been waiting to read.

Ricki: I am reading several books at once. I have about 50 pages left of The Spectacular Now by Tim Tharp, which is very fun. It reminds me very much of The Catcher in the Rye. I am still listening to Annexed by Sharon Dogar on my rides to and from work. I am slowly pounding my way through the 2014 Printz list on GoodReads’ Listopia. I want to be prepared! Anyone have any predictions?

Last Week’s Journeys

Kellee: I read exactly what I had planned this week which is always nice. I finished the Unsolved Mysteries from History by Jane Yolen and look forward to reviewing them over the next 3 weeks. I also finished Stained by Cheryl Rainfield which I’ll review this week (with a fun giveaway!). It was such an intense book; I finished it in just over a day.

Ricki: This week, I finished listening to Enchanted by Alethea Kontis. It is a fun story that reads like a fairy tale. As I read it, I kept flashing to Cinderella. I think this book would be great to read to children before bedtime. I also read All Our Yesterdays by debut author, Cristin Terrill. This is a great time-travel science fiction, and I suspect it will be extremely popular with students. It is the first book in a series. I recommend checking this one out! I’ll be reviewing it on Thursday and will be sure to include some teacher tools for navigation. This would make a great literature circle text or book club book.

This Week’s Expeditions

Kellee: I started The Real Boy this weekend and am loving Anne Ursu’s writing just as much, if not more, in this novel. She just knows how to put words on a page! After Real Boy I have Spartan & the Green Egg by Nabila Khashoggi to read as well as Anubis Speaks: A Guide to the Afterlife by the Egyptian God of the Dead by Vicky Alvear Shecter which I KNOW I’ll love because I am fascinated with mythology.

Ricki: It seems to be one of those times in my life where I am reading too many books at once. I am listening to Annexed by Sharon Dogar. This book tells Peter van Pel’s perspective (from The Diary of Anne Frank). I am enjoying it thus far and will keep you posted. I am also reading The Spectacular Now in preparation for the movie release, and I also want to start Forgive Me, Leonard Peacock by Matthew Quick. I wouldn’t be surprised if I end up straying to a fourth book…or a fifth…
