Happy summer break to many of you! And thank you everyone for being so understanding about me taking last Monday off. There are at least 3 more Mondays I’ll have to take off because of obligations this summer, so please accept my early apologies for not commenting as much this summer–it is going to be a busy one! Please know that I am still lurking and reading posts, just not commenting or responding as much as I try to do usually.

Since the last time I posted on the 22nd, I’ve actually not read a ton. End of the school year tired is more tired than just about any other time of the year. I did finish two very good and VERY different young adult novels:

Wolf by Wolf by Ryan Graudin was a Walden Award finalist, and I can definitely see why they chose it. It is action-packed, thought-provoking, and so wonderfully written.

The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas is everything everyone promised and more. I am still thinking about it, and I finished it on the 23rd. At the end of the novel, I couldn’t stop listening, and I actually sat in my living room and ignored my family to finish the last hour. And I definitely have an audiobook hang over–it is going to be really hard to follow this one.

The boys were really excited about the Fall 2017 #PenguinPicks. Henry barely let me eat breakfast. All three books are stellar, and I will write full reviews as separate posts. In a nutshell:

Come With Me by Holly M. McGhee tells the story of a little girl who is fearful of the terror that is pervasive the news. As a parent, it reminded me of the ways that my children might perceive the world and how I can help them through their fear. It reminds us (both my children and me) to be brave and kind.

Sarabella’s Thinking Cap by Judy Schachner. My goodness. This book is so, so beautiful. I suspect it will be in the running for the Caldecott. Sarabella has difficulty focusing. Her daydreams take her brain to wonderfully imaginative places. I could spend hours with this book. I plan to frame some of the pages for my kids’ bedrooms.

La Princesa and the Pea by Susan Middleton Elya is a bilingual retelling of The Princess and the Pea. There is a bit of a twist, and I laughed out loud as I read a section of the book. This book will bring great joy to kids. It does a great job of using Spanish words in ways that require children to consider context clues. Bonus: The illustrations are stunning!

Henry loved doing a page in this Paint by Sticker Kids book by Workman Publishing. It took us two hours to finish this page (with a break in the middle), but it was very rewarding for him. It’s definitely tricky for a 3.5 year old, but he had so much fun. We talked about numbers and shapes, and he definitely exercised his fine motor skills.

I just didn’t get enough of Ryan Graudin, and I am currently reading the sequel to Wolf by Wolf.

After I finish with Blood by Blood, I plan on reading The Explorers: The Door in the Alley by Adrienne Kress for a blog tour post. (Michele says it is good, so I am looking forward to it.

I am reading three books right now! (One is in each room of my house.)

Jane, Unlimited by Kristin Cashore, Holding Up the Universe by Jennifer Niven, and Highly Illogical Behavior by John Corey Whaley. All three are fantastic. To be honest, I have been having a lot of book luck lately. Everything I’ve been reading has been really great.

Happy Memorial Day! I’m taking this Monday off to enjoy my three day weekend, but I will update you next week 🙂

Also, just as a heads up, I’ll be taking off two Mondays in June also: one for Future Problem Solvers International Conference (anyone live in Wisconsin?) and the other for the American Library Association Annual Conference (anyone going to be there?).

Happy Memorial Day! I spent the last week working on the details for my sister’s bridal shower that was this Sunday. I apologize that I missed out on visiting blogs last week, but I promise to be better!

I finished listening to The Great American Whatever by Tim Federle. What a fantastic book! I particularly loved that the author read the book. This made it feel quite special. This text provides a lot of great opportunities for discussion, and it would make a great addition to high school classrooms.

This week was super busy, but I still had time to devour Russian Roulette by Anthony Horowitz. This is the 10th Alex Rider book; however, it is actually a prequel mixed with a different point of view of #1. And WHOA! What a great read! I’ve loved this series since I picked up the first book and none of them have let me down! I realized the other day when I was talking to a couple of teachers that Stormbreaker came out 13 years ago, so some newer teachers don’t know about this series, so if you don’t know about it–PICK IT UP! It is in my top ten favorite series ever!

My son and I read Real Friends by Shannon Hale in one sitting. This may be weird to some of you (because he is 3-years-old), but he really enjoyed it. We talked about the themes on his level. Shannon Hale’s memoir is going to be an important book for many readers. It delves into issues of popularity, in-crowds, bullying, and kindness. I wish I had this book when I was in 5th grade because I had a tough time with a few students in my class. This book would have provided me solace. This is a great addition to classroom libraries.

I am almost done with The Hate U Give! I have been listening to it every chance I get when I’m alone!

I have some reading choices to make! One is on my #mustread list, one is on the SSYRA list, and one I’m reviewing in June.

I am halfway through the audio of The Great American Whatever by Tim Federle. It is a great, great book.

I just started Scythe by Neal Shusterman. So far, it is very intriguing. I am curious where it goes.

First, I read a title off of my #mustreadin2017 list that is my media specialist’s and fellow reading teacher’s favorite book of all time: Belzhar by Meg Wolitzer. It was so brilliantly crafted and is a fascinating look at the teenage mind, love, guilt, depression/mental illness, friendship, and literature, and I am so glad that I read it (FINALLY, as Jessica Moore would say).

I also was so happy to reread Wig in the Window by Kristen Kittscher in preparation for our Skype visit with Kristen on Friday. I love her Young and Yang mysteries!!!!

Thanks to everyone for the syllabus suggestions for my Adolescents’ Literature course next semester. I welcome any other suggestions of texts if anyone has any! Crystal, your suggestions were incredibly helpful!

This week, I spent a lot of time perusing potential textbooks for my Methods course. I have texts that I love, but I want to see if there are any texts that might be even better. In the meantime, I also devoured a few picture books.

We’re All Wonders by R. J. Palacio is a picture book version (but slightly different) from Wonder. I am a huge fan of Wonder, so I absolutely loved this book. This is a great book to teach kids about the differences between people and how they can #choosekind.

If I Had a Little Dream by Nina Laden is a charming picture book written through a child’s eyes. The verse is beautiful, and it reminds us to appreciate the world around us. If you like the cover, you’ll love the illustrations. I found them to be captivating.

I liked Dragons Love Tacos 2 by Adam Rubin, but I’ll admit that I liked the first book a bit more. My son found this one to be very confusing with the time travel, and I am not sure he understood it when I was explaining it to him. This one seems to be written more for the adults and older kids.

My three-year-old LOVES Batman. He thinks he is Batman. When I asked him what he did at school, he tells me he “Saved the Day!” So he loved this book, Bedtime for Batman by Michael Dahl. It tells the story of a boy who does all of the things that Batman does.

I started The Hate U Give. Have you read this yet? If not, start it. Now. I wish I could sit in my car and just listen to it—brilliant.

I also finally picked up the prequel of the Alex Rider series. I read the whole series and love the stories, but for whatever reason I never read Yassen’s story. With Stormbreaker being read in one of my book clubs (lit circles), it has reignited my interest!

Behind the Legend: The Loch Ness Monster by Erin Peabody is so fascinating! I look forward to sharing it and its companion about Bigfoot soon.

I started listening to The Great American Whatever by Tim Federle. It’s awesome so far.

I also started Dumplin’ by Julie Murphy in the bookstore today. I don’t own this one and have several books that I am reading at home that I love. So I am deciding if I should buy it. I did like the first two chapters a lot!

Seigel’s new series, 5 Worlds, is going to be so popular in my classroom! It has already been read by at least 5 students in a couple of weeks since I’ve had it! I look forward to sharing it more during its blog tour later in May.
I also read both of Nicola Yoon’s books this week, and they both are so addictive; however, I definitely enjoyed The Sun is Also a Star more than Everything Everything, but it is because I figured out the reveal before it was revealed. My teacher book club is going to go see the movie together–is it bad to admit that this may be a story that I’ll like more as a movie? The Sun is Also a Star was a winning love story for me. It was brilliantly crafted and the love was just heart-pounding!
Lastly, I finished listening to Courage for Beginners by Karen Harrington. It is a book that I definitely recommend but not as an audiobook. I don’t think the format fits audiobooks because it switches too often between narrating, thinking, and dialogue and reading the book will definitely make those switches easier to follow. The story is one that I think will be important for many middle schoolers to read–it is about friendship, bullying, and mental health.

I regret to say that I finished The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas. My life will feel a lot more empty without these beautiful, powerful voices inspiring me each day. This book will be on my course syllabus next year, and I can’t wait to talk about it with students. I will also be adding it to my favorite books of all time list. I recommend this book to everyone and anyone.

I haven’t started anything new yet! I need both an audiobook and a book, but I don’t know what I am going to pick up. A colleague has been asking me to read a book for over a year now, so I think I’ll pick it up 🙂

My book list for my Adolescents’ Literature class is due in two weeks, so I am trying to read very purposefully right now. Is there any book that has been published in the last two-three years that is a must-include? I have so many great books and ARCs, and I am trying to decide which one to read next. This was one of those odd weeks where I didn’t have anything that I HAD to read, so I was able to pick what to read. To be honest, this is always harder than I think it should be because I have so many books I want to read; however, I decided to go for my #mustread list and a book that Michele recommended to me this time.

Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli is just a perfect high school story. It has the right bits of snark and romance and drama.
I am so mad at myself for waiting so long to read The Hunted! I loved The Living, and I loved The Hunted. It is interesting though because they are two very different dystopian/post-apocalyptic stories because they deal with two different conflicts, but you really need to read both to understand the full devastation you are just introduced to in The Living.

Moon Shadow was recommended by Michele Knott, and I know exactly why! Moon Shadow is a wonderful middle grade allusion to Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde but more than that as well. It is hard to explain. It is about dealing with change and standing up for yourself and growing up and learning about your personality.

And I finally finished the Masterminds series! OH MY GOODNESS! The whole premise and story and everything is so good! I can’t tell you much about this one because it’ll spoil the first two, but I highly recommend all three.

With Trent, we have discovered book movies on Hoopla through our public library, and it has added another level to our reading because you get the read along ability of a picture book and you get the narrator of an audiobook and you get animation! This week we read You and Me by Susan Verde and Locomotive by Brian Floca.

Another picture book that Trent, Jim, and I have been reading this week has been Lady Pancake and Sir French Toast by Josh Funk, and reading it with Trent now that he is a bit older is just hilarious! He asks SO many questions and argues about what things are and overall just gets really into the story.

.I enjoyed Share, Big Bear, Share by Maureen Wright (click the link to enter the giveaway!) and On Duck Pond by Jane Yolen. Both are excellent books for different reasons. Share, Big Bear, Share made me laugh, and I immediately thought about its classroom possibilities. On Duck Pond is a quiet book that reminded me of Make Way for Ducklings. This book just feels like a classic.

I loved seeing what Sam’s adventure after baseball camp! All the characters you love are there, but the conflict and setting are all different. I hope Stacy continues to bring Sam’s stories to us.

I am so glad that I read Framed last week! The new Sunshine State Young Reader Award list came out this week and lo and behold, there was Framed by James Ponti. I was so excited to be able to book talk this book for my students when the list came out.

Now that I figured out my Masterminds fiasco, I am happily listening to book 3. A big turn just happened as I got home Friday, so I cannot wait to continue listening on Monday (today)!

I’m jumping into my #mustread list with The Hunted, and I was sucked right back into Shy’s messed-up world!

Because of my dissertation (and putting my house on the market), I didn’t have time to read with my eyes this week. But I am more than halfway through The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas, which I am listening to with my ears. GET THIS BOOK. I’ll be putting it on my course syllabus next semester.
