Things got unimaginably hectic this week, work-wise. The last week of the semester has my head spinning! I read 90 pages of the book I’ve posted below, but I didn’t finish anything!

I’ve read Gabrielle Zevin’s YAL and adult novels, and this one, Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow, is beautiful. I am only halfway through, but I am loving every page.

I’ve been in a bit of a reading rut. I’m loving what I’m reading, but I keep falling asleep while reading! I’ll get back into the swing of it, and I luckily have 3 wonderful books to share:

A Place to Hang the Moon by Kate Albus A Work in Progress by Jarrett Lerner What the Fact? by Seema Yasmin

  • A Place to Hang the Moon by Kate Albus: This is on my #mustreadin2023 list because a friend’s 7th grader could not believe I hadn’t read it as it was one of their favorite recent reads, and I am so glad that I finally got around to it. Set during the same event as The War that Saved My Life, the book follows 3 orphans as they join evacuee children going to the countryside during WWII. I loved the three siblings and was so angry at each cruel event that happened to them hoping that everything will work out for them! Also, they LOVE reading!
  • A Work in Progress by Jarrett Lerner: Lerner has created a book that is beautifully written; illustrated in a way that adds to the tone, plot, and character development of the book; and is a book that is going to save lives. It will be a mirror for all of us that were made fun of for how we looked, specifically our weight, and for all kids who has had a bully get into their brain. It will be a window for others who may not understand what it is like to be in the situation Jarrett was in or *fingers crossed* for those who are causing those situations. I also think that it is so important to have a book that looks at body issues in middle school males because, as far as I can tell, there are none or very few books that do in this way. Read this book, I promise.
  • What the Fact? Debunking Disinformation to Detangle the Truth by Seema Yasmin: What a fascinating book! In this day and age where there is so much information being thrown at us all the time, it truly is hard to figure out what is true and what is disinformation. This book breaks down the science behind everything, how to be more proactive, and really makes the readers a better scholar by the end.

I am embarrassed to say that it took me this long to read Gender Queer by Maia Kobabe. I was number 127th on the wait list at the library, and I decided to wait patiently. It was well worth the wait. This is a powerful book, and I am better for having read it.

I really enjoyed Garvey’s Choice: The Graphic Novel by Nikki Grimes, Illustrated by Theodore Taylor III. I really connected with this book and felt like many of Garvey’s interests and thoughts reflected my own. I can’t wait for my son to read this one.

Nothing Interesting Ever Happens to Ethan Fairmont by Nick Brooks New from Here by Kelly Yang Nic Blake and the Remarkables by Angie Thomas We Deserve Monuments by Jas Hammonds

  • Nothing Interesting Ever Happens to Ethan Fairmont by Nick Brooks: What would you do if you found an alien in your town? Ethan Fairmont is faced with that question which drives the entire rest of the book. My favorite part was Ethan’s scientific mind and how he uses it to deal with all the situations that he faces in the book. I also loved the friendship in the book as it felt real because it showed true up and downs.
  • New From Here by Kelly Yang: This book starts in January 2020 as the COVID-19 pandemic begins and goes through early March. I didn’t realize how much reading about COVID would bring back terrible memories, but it definitely did. Luckily, the book was written very well and the Wei-Evans kids were fantastic which made it a fine companion as I revisited such a tough time.
  • Nic Blake and the Remarkables #1: The Manifestor Prophecy by Angie Thomas: I’m reviewing this on Tuesday!
  • We Deserve Monuments by Jaz Hammonds: This novel is written so well; specifically when it comes to character development. I loved meeting them all while Avery explores her new home, new friends, new school, new dreams, and, specifically, the generational family trauma that is all new to her.

Monstrous by Sarah Myer The Hidden Kingdom by Tui T. Sutherland Mermaid Scales and the Town of Sand by Yôko Komori Show-ha Shoten!, Vol. 1 by Takeshi Obata Insomniacs After School, Vol. 1 by Makoto Ojiro Helck, Vol. 1 by Nanaki Nanao

  • Monstrous: A Transracial Adoption Story by Sarah Meyer: This graphic memoir that takes us through Sarah’s inability to fit in, the racist bullying and remarks she faced, and the rage that all of this brings. But it also shows hope. And as a avid artist, which she explores in the graphic novel as well, the artwork is superb.
  • Wings of Fire Graphic Novel #3: The Hidden Kingdom by Tui T. Sutherland: This story takes us into the RainWing kingdom and shows the struggles that Glory, and the rest of the dragonets of the prophecy, face.
  • Mermaid Scales and the Town of Sand by Yôko Komori: This manga starts with Tokiko’s move to a coastal town as her parents deal with a divorce. Tokiko’s only memory of her last visit to the town is that she was saved by a merman when she almost drowned; this memory drives her draw to the ocean but these strange memories are not helpful as she is trying to find a home in the new town. I was a fan of Tokiko, and the artwork sets the quiet tone with purely beautiful art.
  • Sho-Ha Shoten! Volume 1 by Takeshi Obata: This first volume of this slice of life manga puts a stage fright comedian on a journey to finally use his skills on the stage. There are definitely some laugh out loud moments and a definite theme of going for what you love versus what is expected.
  • Insomniacs After School Volume 1 by Makoto Ojiro: Another slice of life manga that doesn’t much get into the story in this first volume. In it you meet the two insomniacs who find friendship around their struggles. I look forward to seeing what happens next.
  • Helck Volume 1 by Nanaki Nanao: Vermilio cannot believe that the front runner for the new Demon Lord is a human, even if Helck is a human who says he hates humans. The rest of the book questions this situation and takes us through different trials as the trials for the Demon Lord throne continues.

A Thing Called Snow by Yuval Zommer is about two animals who are searching for snow. It’s a sweet book that my almost 4-year-old really loved.

I am so mad I didn’t know about this book sooner. It’s really cool! Milo’s Museum by Zetta Elliot tells the story of a child named Milo who doesn’t see herself in the museum, so she creates her own.

Goodbye Winter, Hello Spring by Kenard Pak is a beautiful story about the changing of seasons.

I reread Promise Boys by Nick Brooks to teach it to my class last week. They absolutely love it, and so do I!
