It’s Monday! What Are You Reading? From Picture Books to YA!
It’s Monday! What are you Reading? is a meme hosted by Sheila at Book Journeys. It is a great way to recap what you read and/or reviewed the previous week and to plan out your reading and reviews for the upcoming week. It’s also a great chance to see what others are reading right now…you just might discover the next “must-read” book!
Jen Vincent, of Teach Mentor Texts, and Kellee decided to give It’s Monday! What Are You Reading? a kidlit focus. If you read and review books in children’s literature – picture books, chapter books, middle grade novels, young adult novels, anything in the world of kidlit – join us! We love this meme and think you will, too.
We encourage everyone who participates to support the blogging community by visiting at least three of the other book bloggers that link up and leave comments for them.
It’s Monday! What are you reading? has a new button! Make sure to grab it and update your blog post.
CONGRATULATIONS

Last Week’s Journeys
Kellee: This week I read a SUPER CREEPY book. Now, I am quite sensitive to ghost stories and other horror things, but the book must be super good if it is affecting my dreams. I cannot wait to share Ghostlight with you on Friday. I also read Princess in Black and the Perfect Princess Party by Shannon Hale & Dean Hale, Francine Poulet Meets the Ghost Raccoon by Kate DiCamillo, and Sparky and Tidbit by Karthryn O. Galbraith for last Friday’s post. I think I can blanketly say that I enjoy everything that Shannon Hale and Kate DiCamillo write.
Ricki: This week, I started by reading a book about potty training (Oh Crap!). The author made me laugh, and I feel as prepared as I could be! I also read several picture books with Henry. We read Red: A Crayon’s Story by Michael Hall every night. I’ve mentioned this book on the blog before, but I continue to love the depth to this book. Every time I read it, I think critically about the world. Henry is also obsessed with the Playtown series by Roger Priddy. These are my favorite lift-the-flap books and are great for young kids.
This Week’s Expeditions
Kellee: This week I hope to read Hook’s Revenge by Heidi Schulz, Crenshaw by Katherine Applegate, or Read Between the Lines by Jo Knowles. I want (need) to finish all three of these by the 23rd (or at least two of them), so I need to read as much as I can this week. I am very much looking forward to all of them.
Ricki: I am loving A.S. King’s Glory O’Brien’s History of the Future. Next, I am excited to read Like Water on Stone by Dana Walrath. I’ve heard it is incredible.

I love the new picture! Should we add that to our blogs too?
Ricki, check out the potty training book for boys… not sure what it’s called but it’s illustrated by Arree Chung (Ninja!). It’s hilarious! Was published this year.
I’m looking forward to the Honor Girl post. I’ve heard a few things about it, but nothing in detail yet!
Yes! Please update your button on IMWAYR as well 🙂
I hope you enjoy the post on Wednesday 🙂
Oh, goodie! I think I’d heard of it, but it didn’t register in my head. I will surely get it!!!
Love the new logo! Will definitely update my post soon.
Agreed. Kate DiCamillo could write a grocery list, and I would want to read it!
Thank you 🙂 Jen did a great job!
And no kidding! She is the Morgan Freeman of writing 🙂
We love it, too!!
I loved the book Red. Such an important message. Looking forward to reading your thoughts about Crenshaw, Reading Between the Lines, and Glory O’Brien.
Red is SUCH an important message. I want to get it to share with my students.
I hope I can get through both of them this week! Have you read Read Between the Lines? If so, we’re having a chat next Wednesday.
I am glad you like it, too! I always value your thoughts. 🙂
Top Ten Villians! I look forward to that one 🙂 Ricki – I love those days of rereading and rereading favourite picture books. I still have some memorized. Then we started doing Dennis Lee poems before nap time. Oh, how I love those! Kellee – I just finished Read Between the Lines Can’t wait for our chat!
The villains post was so much fun to write!
Rereading is so much fun! It is so interesting what books kids gravitate too, though. 🙂
I can’t wait for our chat either! I hope I finish in time!
It’s funny to go out with other moms, and you realize you have so many of the same books memorized! It is quite a phenomenon!
I am looking forward to A.S. King’s most recent book. I still haven’t bought a copy of it but will eventually. Her books don’t always work for me as novels, but I always find them thought-provoking and worth reading. Red is one I’d like to share in my classes this semester. Thanks for the reminder! And Kellee, I’m with you: I like everything Shannon Hale and Kate DiCamillo write!
I can see that about King. Even if you don’t like her narratives, her texts are always thought-provoking.
Hale and DiCamillo are so good!
Her books are always so clever in their plot-lines. Kellee and I have spent a lot of time talking about her books. I always love how discussion-worthy they are.
Kellee = That’s funny – I read TWO middle-grade novels with ghosts in them last week! ‘Tis the season, I guess. Ghostlight looks great – can’t wait to hear more about it. I, too, love anything by Kate DiCamillo!
Ricki – Glad you are enjoying Glory O’Brien – I still want to read it!
Which of you read Honor Girl? The author is coming to our tiny local bookstore this month!
Enjoy your books this week –
Sue
P.S. Kellee – in choosing your prize for the Big Book Summer Giveaway, you are also welcome to either Doll Bones or Ghost Hawk – neither is a big book, but I just finished them both last week and loved both of them! Either would be great in a classroom.
Book By Book
Ghosts are scary!! My students love them, but I get so frightened!! Ghostlight IS good 🙂
DiCamillo is brilliant. There isn’t any other way to say it.
I’d love Ghost Hawk! My students would adore it. I was also thinking I Am Number Four, but I think my kiddos would like ghost stories more!
OH! And I read Honor Girl. It is a special graphic memoir. It is going to be important to a lot of readers out there. Are you going to go see the author?
Probably not – haven’t left the house in a few weeks now and can’t really afford new books now anyway. But it looks great & I know our local bookstore owner always chooses amazing guests!
Great! Ghost Hawk is an AMAZING book – not just a ghost story but an important historical novel about how things REALLY were between the Puritans and the native Americans – horrifying in a completely different way than ghosts! It is a really powerful novel that is going to stick with me for a long time. I will send it as soon as I write my review 🙂 That might still be a few weeks depending on when I feel well enough to get back into a more normal writing routine. OK?
Hooray for book love. 🙂 Kellee is the one who read Honor Girl, I think.
YES, I am loving Glory O’Brien. It is so weird, but so good!
Kellee, I’m excited to read the post about Ghostlight. I LOVE creepy book!
Ricki, I am so glad you’re enjoying Glory O’Brien. It’s a very special book.
Can’t wait to read the Top Ten Villains post tomorrow and I’m glad Carrie mentioned it, since I somehow over looked that part when I read your post! Villains are usually what I remember most vividly about a novel.
So creepy! But I actually enjoyed it because it was done so well.
Writing about villains was so much fun! 🙂
I sure am enjoying it! I will keep you posted. 🙂
I love VILLAINS! I hope you will share some of your favorites when you stop by (or link us to your post if you plan to do one!)
Kellee, I’m looking forward to reading your review about Ghostlight, but I don’ know if I will read the book itself. I don’t do scary well, well actually, I don’t do it at all. I’m green with envy that you have Crenshaw, Hoook’s Revenge and Read Between the Lines coming up.
Ricki, REd, A caryon’s story is so powerful. Every adult at our school who read it had tears. I too enjoyed Glory O’Brien’s History of the Future, although there were bits that didn’t quite work for me. Hope you love it.
Oh my, many books to read/finish by a certain date, good luck. I finished Glory O’Brian, loved it. Have Hook’s Revenge still sitting in my TBR stack but it is whittling down in a peaceful way… too bad I keep adding to it! 🙂
Red was surprisingly good. I thought it was going to be a rip off. And we’re having a Princess in Black party next month at work. The illustrator and a bunch of her friends stopped by the store last Friday!
Crenshaw sounds like a really special book. I LOVE creepy books! Ghostlight sounds like a perfect read. Looking forward to your thoughts about this.
