It’s Monday! What Are You Reading? From Picture Books to YA!

It’s Monday! What are you Reading? is a meme hosted by Sheila at Book Journeys. It is a great way to recap what you read and/or reviewed the previous week and to plan out your reading and reviews for the upcoming week. It’s also a great chance to see what others are reading right now…you just might discover the next “must-read” book!

Jen Vincent, of Teach Mentor Texts, and Kellee decided to give It’s Monday! What Are You Reading? a kidlit focus. If you read and review books in children’s literature – picture books, chapter books, middle grade novels, young adult novels, anything in the world of kidlit – join us! We love this meme and think you will, too.

We encourage everyone who participates to support the blogging community by visiting at least three of the other book bloggers that link up and leave comments for them.

Last Week’s Journeys

Kellee: A valley of reading to make up for my peak last week—no finished books this week. I blame being sick this weekend, because I usually get most of my reading done on Friday nights and Saturdays. Plus side, I am reading a really great book—Guys Read: Other Worlds edited by Jon Scieszka which, so far, is my favorite Guys Read. I’m really enjoying every story so far!

Ricki: This week, I finished listening to Grave Mercy by R.L. LaFevers. It was dark, mysterious, and purely wonderful. If you like fantasy, I highly recommend it. I listened to a read-aloud of The Other Side by Jacqueline Woodson. This one brought me close to tears. I loved this children’s book. Lastly, I finished Trash by Andy Mulligan. I’ve always wanted to read this one, and I am glad that I did. All three books were great reads.

This Week’s Expeditions

Kellee: This week I am going to finish Guys Read: Other Worlds and then start Stained by Cheryl Rainfield. I also have a pile of picture books I want to read this week. Should be a good reading week!

Ricki: After my husband falls asleep, I steal the Kindle each night and read a bit more of Dream Thieves by Maggie Stiefvater. I also just started The Spectacular Now by Tim Tharp. I read this while my husband has the Kindle. 🙂 Lastly, I just downloaded Enchanted by Alethea Kontis to my phone. This was a free AudioSync book this summer. I plan to start this one on the drive to school tomorrow!

Hi there Kellee and Ricki, I have a copy of Guys Write for Guys Read but haven’t gotten around to reading it yet. I am a huge fan of Jon Scieszka though. The Boy who Dared looks like an interesting read. Have a great reading week ahead of you!

  3. Karen Yingling says:

The Boy Who Dared is great, but my students’ new favorite is Prisoner B-3087. Looks like you have some good things to read.

  4. Carrie Gelson says:

Ricki- I just picked up my requested copy of Grave Mercy at the library – although don’t know if it will be this week I will get to it! Enjoy that Dream Thieves listening – even if it is just in little moments! Kellee – hope you are feeling better. Happy reading this week!

  5. Beth S. says:

Looking forward to reading your review of Rose Under Fire. Barbed Wire Baseball looks really interesting too.

  6. Lorna Wheaton says:

I’m really looking forward to the next Guys Read installment. I did the audio for Guys Read: Funny Business and it was fantastic. I enjoyed Code Name Verity more than I thought I would, so I’m looking forward to your thoughts on it.

  7. Crystal Brunelle says:

It was our first week of school, so I struggled to find reading time. I enjoyed Grave Mercy. I tried to get to the sequel this summer, but still haven’t picked it up. The length of some books gets me. I always look at the long ones and think I could finish three or four middle-grades in the time it will take me to read that. I know I would enjoy it though. Some day. 🙂

    • Kellee Moye says:

Crystal, I completely understand – going back to work really puts a damper in reading time!
I feel the same way with long books sometimes – I know exactly where you are coming from.

    • Ricki Ginsberg says:

I was reading that the sequel is from Sybella’s point of view. This is quite exciting. I am hoping I like it as much as the first one.

  8. Holly Mueller says:

I’ve had Grave Mercy sitting around for a while, so I need to pick it up and read it! I also need to read the Guys Read books – I have a few in my classroom library and the kids love them, but I haven’t read them myself. Need to do that!!

    • Kellee Moye says:

I’ve read 3 of them now (I think) and they are all pretty great. Like any short story anthology, all of the stories didn’t blow me away, but overall a great collection 🙂

    • Ricki Ginsberg says:

Yes, read Grave Mercy. It is absolutely excellent. My husband asked how I could “stilllll be listening to it.” I told him it was because it was 12 discs, but really, I didn’t want to let it go. 🙂

  9. Earl Dizon says:

I should check out Guys Read. It might be good to have in the store for reluctant boy readers and parents who want to veer them away from superhero and graphic novels which there’s nothing wrong with them!
