It’s Monday! What Are You Reading? From Picture Books to YA!

It’s Monday! What are you Reading? is a meme started by Sheila at Book Journeys and now hosted by Kathryn at The Book Date. It is a great way to recap what you read and/or reviewed the previous week and to plan out your reading and reviews for the upcoming week. It’s also a great chance to see what others are reading right now…you just might discover the next “must-read” book!

Kellee and Jen, of Teach Mentor Texts, decided to give It’s Monday! What Are You Reading? a kidlit focus. If you read and review books in children’s literature – picture books, chapter books, middle grade novels, young adult novels, anything in the world of kidlit – join us! We love this meme and think you will, too.

We encourage everyone who participates to support the blogging community by visiting at least three of the other book bloggers that link up and leave comments for them.

 Last Week’s Journeys

Kellee: I completely failed on my winter break book-a-day (though I had started so well), but I definitely had fun-a-day! My sister, who I hadn’t seen since May, was here as was my WHOLE family; we visited Universal & Harry Potter; I took Trent to Sea Life Aquarium and the Orlando Eye; we saw Elmo’s Christmas Show at Sea World; and I just overall spent an entire week being a mom, wife, daughter, and sister. Though not much reading was none, I loved it!

The one book I did finish, and couldn’t put down once I started it!, was Alistair Grim’s Odditorium by Gregory Funaro. I will be reviewing this on Friday, but it is best described as a completely unique story that will reminds me of Frankenstein, Series of Unfortunate Events, Harry Potter, and Emerald Atlas all rolled into one but with its own magical awesomeness.

Ricki: I was on a sprint to tackle more books on my #mustreadin2015 list, and then 2016 hit, and I focused on transcribing my dissertation interviews. I typed for eight hour straight yesterday, and I only finished one interview! Ah! I finished A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park, and I plan to tackle much more this week.

This Week’s Expeditions

Kellee: This week we go back to work, so I don’t know how much reading will be done again, but I hope to read Ruta Sepetys’s Salt to the Sea, so I can join Ricki in reviewing it next week. I also have a nonfiction text, Kid Athlete, to read which I’ll pick up after. I didn’t complete my TO DO of going through my room of books, so I am sure when I do I will find even more in there I want to read!

Happy first day back at work to all the teachers returning! I hope it is a wonderful day/week/month/year!

Ricki: I am halfway through Rules by Cynthia Lord, and then I plan to get a kickstart on my #mustreadin2016 list. Yahoo! Happy first day back to work, teacher friends!

  1. I’m glad you both had wonderful breaks! I love the “fun-a-day.” What did you think of the Harry Potter attraction?

Odditorium sounds like my kind of book, and I also loved Long Walk to Water and Rules (even though very different).

Have a great week back at school.

    • Harry Potter at Universal is SO WELL DONE! I didn’t go for the first time until last May, and I wish I could spend hours and hours there. They did such a fantastic job.
I hope you pick up Odditorium–it deserves lots of readers!

  2. Wow, Kellee, it sounds like you had a wonderful holiday season with your family! That must be pretty cool to LIVE in Florida, where everyone else goes on vacation! Odditorium sounds very intriguing.

Ricki, I LOVED Rules by Cynthia Lord – hope you like it, too.

Happy New Year to you both!!

Hope you enjoy your books this week…and have a wonderful reading year ahead!

  3. Kellee, that sounds like the makings of a wonderful Christmas break — even if you didn’t get much reading done! And Ricki, well, I’d like to say transcribing interviews for your dissertation sounds exciting, but well, probably not so much. But yay for getting work done on your dissertation. 🙂

  4. It seems that Winter Break is never really the time to get everything done. But it does seem to be more time with friends and family.
I got a lot read, but there is a list of other things that did not get done. And now the reading time will slllloooowww down!

  5. Kellee we too had company over the holidays. Our in-laws from Korea came for a visit. They spoke no English, and we spoke No Korean, but in spite of all that, I think everyone enjoyed themselves. It did get in the way of serious reading. I just went to read more about the Odditorium, and boy do I want to read it!
Good luck with the transcribing Rickie. My partner who makes documentaries used to pay someone to transcribe. A Long Walk to Water and Rules are books I loved. I want to read Salt to the Sea so I’ll look forward Reading your review.

    • Although it must have been challenging to communicate, I am sure your in-laws were so excited to come visit!
Odditorium is such a cool book! Come back and read the Q&A on Friday, and you will want to read it even more 🙂

  6. So excited you both are joining in again for #mustreadin2016! Sounds like you got some great reading done in the break even if some family adventures might have taken you away from the pages for a while Kellee. Ricki, you did well on your list this winter!
