It’s Monday! What Are You Reading? From Picture Books to YA!

It’s Monday! What are you Reading? is a meme hosted by Sheila at Book Journeys. It is a great way to recap what you read and/or reviewed the previous week and to plan out your reading and reviews for the upcoming week. It’s also a great chance to see what others are reading right now…you just might discover the next “must-read” book!

Jen Vincent, of Teach Mentor Texts, and Kellee decided to give It’s Monday! What Are You Reading? a kidlit focus. If you read and review books in children’s literature – picture books, chapter books, middle grade novels, young adult novels, anything in the world of kidlit – join us! We love this meme and think you will, too.

We encourage everyone who participates to support the blogging community by visiting at least three of the other book bloggers that link up and leave comments for them.

 Last Week’s Journeys

Kellee: This week was a bit slower for me. I’ve been finding myself more tired at the end of the day, so reading has been minimal. I did finish a high fantasy YA novel called A Creature of Moonlight by debut author Rebecca Hahn. She did a wonderful job world building and has a way with beautiful imagery.

Ricki: This week, I read the nonfiction book, Fatal Fever: Tracking Down Typhoid Mary by Gail Jarrow. I learned all about Typhoid Mary and the typhoid fever epidemic in the early 1900s. I also read a middle grade book, Cast Off: The Strange Adventures of Petra de Winter and Bram Broen by Eva Yohalem. This high-seas adventure is set in 1663 Amsterdam. I’ll be reviewing these both in the next two weeks!

Henry and I had a lovely trip to the bookstore. (This is becoming a tradition.) We really enjoyed (and bought) What Do You Do with an Idea? by Kobi Yamada. I’d heard of this book but had never read it. As many of you have written in previous blog posts, this book is a must-read. We also bought a few car board books because Henry is obsessed with cars. I really liked That’s Not My Train by Fiona Watt. It has a lot of textures that make the story fun. My son also loved Red Truck by Kersten Hamilton. I didn’t find it to be extraordinarily creative, but he enjoys reminding me about the “CAR!” on each page.

This Week’s Expeditions

Kellee: I am still listening to The Very Nearly Honorable League of Pirates: Magic Marks the Spot by Caroline Carlson, and I am LOVING it. That narrator is phenomenal which makes the funny, adventure-filled prose even better. I plan on starting If You’re Reading This by Trent Reedy tonight.

Ricki: I started X by Ilyasah Shabazz and Kekla Magoon. It is great so far, and I am looking forward to finishing it. I also hope to read Saint Anything by Sarah Dessen.

  1. Looks like you both had good reading weeks, with some interesting books – I haven’t read any of those you mentioned. In fact, I haven’t read much middle-grade or YA at all lately, as I’ve been tied up with either book group reads or the books I read for Booktopia. As soon as I finish my current book group book, I plan to devote the rest of May to reading as many kids/teen/YA books as I can!

Enjoy your books this week –

  2. I know I already said this, but I really, really loved X. Such an amazing book.

Sarah Dessen is coming to a local bookstore this week and I think I’m going to go. Believe it or not, I haven’t read any Sarah Dessen books before! :O

    • I haven’t read a lot of Dessen, but I really liked Just Listen. You are going to love seeing her. Like Ricki said, she is wonderful to see speak.
I cannot wait until X is the audiobooksync book, so I can listen to it 🙂

  3. I’m looking forward to reading your thoughts on X Ricki. I read it a while ago and found it thought provoking and heartbreaking at the same time. I’ve got The Very Nearly Honorable League of Pirates on my to read list. It sounds like I should move it up closer to the top of my pile.

  4. Had to laugh at your son pointing out the car on each page, Ricki. When my son first came here, he had very little English, but he knew his colors and the word car. So our entire communication for the first month was “blue car! red car! white car!” ALL DAY. My husband and I still joke about it sometimes. And my son has grown into a boy who LOVES cars so we STILL hear a lot of “Oh my gosh, did you see the rims on that car?!” I find myself actually noticing these things when I’m by myself which I think must be a sign of extreme maternal love, LOL. I am eager to read the new Sarah Dessen too especially after reading an interview with her at, I think, Teen Librarian Toolbox. Kellee, I’m always looking for good audios, so will look for the Carlson book.

  5. Love that book store trips are becoming a tradition Ricki. I loved taking my children to both the bookstore and library when they were small. My daughter and I both still love hanging out at both. Happy reading to you both this week. Sadly I missed posting a IMWAYR update this week – a bad cough and family birthday celebrations kept me too busy – next week I will post for 2 weeks of reading 🙂

  6. Hi Ladies! Yes, just getting around to my comments today! Crazy week, coming back from vacation!
Ricki, yes, please read Circus Mirandus so we can discuss! Can’t wait to hear what you think about X.
Kellee, I’ve had Pirates for years, and haven’t gotten to it. Maybe I’ll see if I can get it from the library on audio!
Hope you have a great weekend!
