It’s Monday! What Are You Reading? From Picture Books to YA!

It’s Monday! What are you Reading? is a meme hosted by Sheila at Book Journeys. It is a great way to recap what you read and/or reviewed the previous week and to plan out your reading and reviews for the upcoming week. It’s also a great chance to see what others are reading right now…you just might discover the next “must-read” book!

Jen Vincent, of Teach Mentor Texts, and Kellee decided to give It’s Monday! What Are You Reading? a kidlit focus. If you read and review books in children’s literature – picture books, chapter books, middle grade novels, young adult novels, anything in the world of kidlit – join us! We love this meme and think you will, too.

We encourage everyone who participates to support the blogging community by visiting at least three of the other book bloggers that link up and leave comments for them.

 Last Week’s Journeys

Kellee: I finished Sometimes Never, Sometimes Always by Elissa Janine Hoole which, unfortunately, took me all week to finish it.  It was overall a good book, but I just had trouble connecting to the protagonist until about half way through… then it was smooth sailing. I did finish it Saturday, but because of going to be early and waking up early to see my husband finish his first marathon (actually he did the Dopey Challenge this weekend! 48.6 miles in 4 days!), I haven’t started another book yet.

Ricki: Last week, I read seven books. This week, I read zero. Yes, ZERO! I am so embarrassed. My excuse: Henry’s colic has gotten increasingly worse. We have been dealing with a child who screams from 8pm to midnight. The hours before and after that, he fusses. My life balance is all a mess! To be fair, my husband and I reread The Little Engine that Could to him last night, but I included that book in a past week’s post. We also read a book about cars, but it wasn’t memorable enough for me to remember the title. I have also read about fifty more pages in Winger by Andrew Smith. But books completed? None.

This Week’s Expeditions

Kellee: I am still listening to Ocean at the End of the Lane. I am carpooling again (3 days this week), but I am listening whenever I am alone. I am almost finished with disc 4 (out of 5), so I should finish it soon. I plan to start Life in Outer Space by Melissa Keil tonight and finish it this week. I then plan on reading Two Boys Kissing by David Levithan.

Ricki: This week, I would love to finish Winger by Andrew Smith. I read a few pages to Henry (and even read the swears–I figure it is safe, as he is only 6 weeks old). I also plan to read some of Pedagogy of the Oppressed by Paulo Freire for school. I’d love to finish two or three picture books too, if Henry is willing to listen. 🙂

  1. Oh Ricki, so sorry about your little guy and the fussing. Hope it is short lived. I never had to deal with colic but I did have to deal with tag team babies (nursing twins) who took a LONG time to sleep through the night. Now they are amazing sleepers! (at age eleven!) Hope this week brings happy reading to both of you!

  2. I’m sorry you are dealing with a baby who’s feeling icky. I am hoping that this week goes much more smoothly. I wish you both a great week of reading.

  3. Ricki – Just wanted to mention a tip to consider for Henry. Our first son also screamed – pretty much round the clock after the first couple of months but especially when we tried to set him down. So, I understand how difficult and exhausting it is to live with. With our son, it turned out he was intolerant to both milk and soy, and once we switched him to hypoallergenic formula, he was fine! No more screaming. So, you might want to check that out. If you are nursing, try cutting out all dairy in your own diet – I wish I had known to try that first before we switched to the very expensive hypoallergenic formula. If you’re feeding Henry formula, try a soy formula or a hypoallergenic, just to see if it helps. Good luck!!

Hope you are both able to enjoy some good books this week!

    • Sue,

Thank you for this wonderful advice! I just read this on the internet two days ago, and after 48 hours of no dairy, he didn’t scream last night! I am hoping it isn’t a fluke. We bought some soy formula too, but we were trying the no dairy first, as I really want to continue nursing him. It is so great to read that others have had this problem—it makes me feel less alone! As much as I love dairy, I am willing to cut it out of my diet if it means that he is a happy baby!

Thanks again for your comments. It means a lot to me!

  4. Kellee – I love carpooling but isn’t it frustrating sometimes when you just want to listen to your book? Now that I commute by bus, running into friends while waiting/riding the bus can throw my rhythm of listening off… as much as I want to chat with them. 🙂 Enjoy the end of Ocean at the End of the Lane, I had to reread a few chapters…
Ricki, colic is quite the challenge, but I do agree with you, no worries about what you’re reading aloud, rhythm is special and so is simply your voice… Hope you can get some sleep and squeeze in a little reading as well, best of luck…

    • Thank you, Debbie! Last night, he didn’t scream, so I finally got a few books in. I will surely have more to share next week on IMWAYR. Thank you for your thoughts. 🙂 🙂 Happy reading!

  5. Sorry for the upset baby-a change in diet worked for my daughter with her first, too. Maybe you’ve found the solution! Hope so! Your books mentioned are still on my list, plugging along book by book-but fun! Have a great week both of you!

  6. Hi there Kellee, can’t wait to read your thoughts about ocean at the end of the lane, one of my favourites from last year. Ricki, my daughter was colicky too as a young baby, which was really quite difficult at the time. Hope you get to read more this week.

  7. I need to relearn it’s quality not quantity that matters. But it’s difficult when I’m so used to reading so many books in the past. It’s like I have to at least maintain that level. Have a great reading week! It’s great that you’re reading for two!
