It’s Monday! What Are You Reading? From Picture Books to YA!
It’s Monday! What are you Reading? is a meme started by Sheila at Book Journeys and now hosted by Kathryn at The Book Date. It is a great way to recap what you read and/or reviewed the previous week and to plan out your reading and reviews for the upcoming week. It’s also a great chance to see what others are reading right now…you just might discover the next “must-read” book!

Last Week’s Journeys

First, I wanted to share that I finished listening to NPR’s S-Town, the podcast I had started. It was such interesting piece of storytelling and although really not appropriate for any children, it is something I recommend to all of you!
I also finished Midnight at the Electric by Jodi Lynn Anderson which I cannot wait to chat with her about at ALAN! It is a book that doesn’t fit any specific genre but is about how the future and past all intertwine and about our future here on Earth.

This week, I REREAD Unwind by Neal Shusterman, and I look forward to talking about speculative fiction with my students!
I also read every Sandra Boynton board book that was available in the bookstore. There were at least a dozen there. I may or may not have purchased three of them to add to our collection. My younger son and I spent two hours in the bookstore looking for the best books to purchase with a birthday gift card that he received, so we perused A LOT of books. It was a great time!
This Week’s Expeditions

- I am hosting Laurie Halse Anderson at a round table during the “YA Lit is Complex!” session at NCTE, so I am rereading The Impossible Knife of Memory to complete a handout and write some questions for Laurie.
- Our next book for my teacher book club is Burn Baby Burn by Meg Medina, so as soon as I’m done with Impossible, I’ll be picking up Burn.
- I don’t know what to listen to next!!! Nothing that I want to read has an aubiobook available at my library… Ugh. Maybe I’ll listen to another podcast first.

I just got Long Way Down by Jason Reynolds, and I am PUMPED to read it!

Kellee, Midnight at the Electric sounds really intriguing. And I have been wanting to read Burn Baby Burn since it came out.
I’ve heard a lot of great things about S-Town, but I just can;t fit in another podcast! So many good ones out there. I just added a new writing podcast last week that I have been listening to like crazy. And I need to leave time for audiobooks, too!! Speaking of audios, you can get review audios (digital downloads) from the same publishers you get print review books from – just ask your contact. That’s how I get my audios (so I have a big backlog at the moment but I always have plenty to choose from!)
Ricki – The UNwind series is one of my favorites of all time!! Great writing, gripping story, but also the parallels to our own society are SO mind-blowing and eye-opening. Just love it – glad you are teaching it!
And we also loved all the Boynton board books – the first book my older son learned to “read” was the Boynton 1,2,3 book he memorized to “read” to his little brother! All so clever and fun.

Book By Book
Kellee, I hate it when I don’t have access to an audiobook I want to read. I’ve taken to borrowing audiobooks on CD that I want to listen to some day, importing them into my computer and saving them for later. The problem is that I forget they are available.
Ricki, I admit that now that I am a Gramma, I spend too much money on board books. Because I have two grandbabies, I have to purchase duplicates of everything!

Kellee, I got MIDNIGHT this summer when I was in Florida, but never got to it (along with 200 other books….). Now I’m intrigued!
I’ve got the new Coco and Space Boy to read the next week or so. Looking forward to both.
I would agree with you about S-Town Kellee. It was compelling storytelling and worth listening. And yes, not for kids. Eek.
Yay for NCTE and Ricki I think you’ll be wowed by Long Way Down.
I need to talk with so many people about the ending of Long Way Down.
Wow your reads and rereads look amazing ladies! Long Way Down is one I can’t wait to read! And The Impossible Knife of Memory and Burn Baby Burn are titles I can’t recommend enough.
