It’s Monday! What Are You Reading? From Picture Books to YA!

It’s Monday! What are you Reading? is a meme hosted by Sheila at Book Journeys. It is a great way to recap what you read and/or reviewed the previous week and to plan out your reading and reviews for the upcoming week. It’s also a great chance to see what others are reading right now…you just might discover the next “must-read” book!

Jen Vincent, of Teach Mentor Texts, and Kellee decided to give It’s Monday! What Are You Reading? a kidlit focus. If you read and review books in children’s literature – picture books, chapter books, middle grade novels, young adult novels, anything in the world of kidlit – join us! We love this meme and think you will, too.

We encourage everyone who participates to support the blogging community by visiting at least three of the other book bloggers that link up and leave comments for them.

Last Week’s Journeys

Kellee: This last week I finished Doll Bones (SO GOOD!). Once I got into it, I couldn’t stop. I then did some rereading in preparation for this week’s reviews: Chatswood Spooks #1 & #2 and Scaredy Squirrel Prepares for Halloween. Finally, I started My Sister Jodie by Jacqueline Woodson and I look forward to finishing it.

Ricki: This week, I read The Declaration by Gemma Malley. I love dystopians, and I have always wanted to read this one, so I was excited when it was assigned in a Methods class I am observing. I decided to read it along with the students because it seemed like the perfect opportunity. My reading group loved it. I also read Reality Boy by A. S. King. She is phenomenal, isn’t she? I loved this book as much as I loved her others, and look for the review this Thursday!

This Week’s Expeditions

Kellee: This week I plan to finish My Sister Jacqueline. I then plan on reading Encyclopedia Horrifica then Halloween Hustle in preparation for more scary reviews. After that I have a pile of four books to read for ALAN and cannot wait to read them: Gorgeous by Paul Rudnick, girlchild by Tupelo Hassman, Loud Awake and Lost by Adele Griffin, and Season of the Witch by Mariah Fredericks. They should last me a couple of weeks 🙂

Ricki: This week, I also plan to read Halloween Hustle in preparation for our Halloween review day. I got caught up in books this past week, but I am definitely excited to get to Hetty Feather by Jacqueline Wilson. Also, I just started a book by my advisor, Wendy Glenn. It is awesome so far (and I say that without bias—it is very engaging, and I can’t wait for bedtime to get back to it!). You can get the manuscript for free at www.swoonreads.com.

  1. It seems you two are both excited about your upcoming reading week! That’s great. I’m finally getting into a book that was kind of taking me forever to read. But of course it could just be I’m getting excited that I’m almost done with it.

  2. You both had great reading weeks! I need to read more by A.S. King–I have Everybody Sees the Ants on my Kindle and might just bust it out this week. I think it is fun that you are doing a Halloween themed review. Have a fabulous reading week!

    • A. S. King is definitely one of my favorite writers. She seems to perfectly balance strong literary merit and appeal. It is really hard for writers to do well in both of those areas at once, in my opinion, and she definitely has a knack for it!

  3. So looking forward to Reality Boy. I am not really a scary book reader, but those look doable. Scaredy Squirrel and Halloween Hustle in particular. 🙂 I loved Doll Bones too. More creepy, than outright scary.

  4. Some great reading ladies! Kellee so pleased you liked Doll Bones. I really can’t wait to have my student book club read this title – as soon as it is out in soft cover, we’ll buy it! Scaredy Squirrel prepares for Halloween is at the top of my picture book pile right now – want to read it to my own children. Ricki – I am SO excited to read Reality Boy. I think I have read all of King’s titles so far and just think she is phenomenal.

    • I think I have also read all of her titles. This one is very different in its plot. It did remind me of EVERYBODY SEES THE ANTS a little bit (and in a good way, rather than a repetitive way). I was definitely hooked.

    • The Declaration was a popular series a few years ago, I believe. It was a choice for the literature circles in the class I am observing. I loved it.

      I am glad we agree about A. S. King. 🙂 🙂

  5. Ooooh! Can’t wait to read the new Scaredy Squirrel! Glad to hear you liked Doll Bones, Kellee! It’s a favorite of mine so far this year. I think she did such a great job capture that feeling of middle schoolers with one foot in childhood and another in the teen world. Ricki–I haven’t read any A.S. King yet. Any title you’d steer me to first?

    • I actually like the Scaredy Squirrel prepares… books better than the original. I think they are pretty darn funny.
What a great way to put it–it was a perfect capture of that awkward point in our lives.
My favorite A.S. King is Ask the Passengers 🙂

    • I am with Kellee and Crystal (well, her close second). I think Ask the Passengers is my favorite. It hit me emotionally, and I still think about it, a year later. 🙂 I have yet to read an A.S. King book I haven’t liked, but that would be my favorite (if I was forced to pick one)!
